retrofit power rear sunshade

Can a power rear sunshade be installed in a 98 e430 mercedes? Are the wires already in place with the wiring harness? Has anyone the done this to their Mercedes? If so I would like the steps to disassemble and install

Yes it can be retrofitted...

NO The car is NOT Prewired for the option..One Must add the wire harness and replace the wood panel for the shade switch

Contact Steve @ MBENZNL.com re the parts

If You want to TRY to do this ..One WILL Need a Copy of WIS from Mercedes benz

Some version coding with the SDS would likely have to happen.

Thumbs up MBENZNL.com

I realize this is not very helpful, but I was considering buying a '99 E430 without the rear window sunshade. I asked my dealer's service manager and he said "you don't want to do that". I don't know if they do not like doing the job or what, but he implied it would be pretty expensive.

I have heard a lot of good things about Steve with http://www.mbenznl.com and have always received answers to my questions. Either he, or his female assistant (I heard from Wanda in his absence) will get back to you.

Why would you want to do that...? The rear sun shade is almost pointless. Why spend the money to put one in on an old car lol? Just tint the windows and that will keep the car cooler, look nicer, and cheaper in price. I have a sun shade, and have never used it since tint. And even before tinting, I rarely used it. It looks ugly when it is up.

Were you to obtain the Service DVD for W210 from your dealer or at 800.for.merc you'd find a procedure entitled "Retrofitting Scissors-type Sunshade for Rear Window."

The procedures includes two main steps:
retrofit wiring harness
retrofit sunshade

The former involves removal/replacement of lots of the interior as the wiring harness runs from underhood to the rear. You'll also be removing the center console to install the switch, which requires a different piece of wood.

The sunshade installation appears fairly simple, as it's a complete rear shelf replacement.

I actually really like the rear sunshade. While not its intended purpose, it really cuts down on light glare at night. I love it for that reason alone.

I like mine too and it stays up 99% of the time. The older style is a little crude IMO because when it is down, you see the shade material bunched up. The never ones almost disappear completely inside the rear window shelf, but I don't know in which year the changover occurred.
