To stagger or not to stagger...
Hey guys, planning on purchasing some 18inch rims for my 2001 E320. Should I stagger? Or go with the straight look? And also what size of rim should I go with 18x8.5 on front and 18x9.5 on the back? Any input appreciated.
Thanks

Staggered is a concept more realistically proven in racing, on the track, etc. In
the real and practical world of commuter driving, the benefits are so small that
it's all but measurable, aesthetics only, or wasted.
Having all four corners match allow the owner to rotate and prolong the useful-
ness of the tires. Tires are likely to be cheaper as well, presuming that all-four
are of the smaller size. Larger footprint means larger weight and traction.....
with a corresponding flip side and potential for lower fuel economy. The 'more
aggressive' stance is noticeable only by car enthusiasts.
Having blathered all that, I have staggered E55 take offs. I liked the rims.

Just go with the E55 setup 18x8 in front 18x9 in back. I did not notice any change in my fuel economy when I went from the stock 16 inch wheels to a set of 18 inch E55 take offs. I also like the look better.

Staggered!!! Not only does the car handle nice around turns if you drive crazy like me but it also looks nice. IMO, staggered wheels complete the car...

It's obviously a matter of personal taste, but I like having the ability to rotate my tires. Plus, in general the larger the wheels, the rougher the ride. If I were to do that, I think I would use the E55 setup too.

Sup. Staggered is a good way to go, it looks good, and improve handling and rear wheel traction.

Staggered looks better. I agree most people won't notice at all, but I do and enthusiasts do. The larger rear wheels just fills out the wheel well better.
I agree it probably does not make any performance difference... all my puny 217 horses don't care what size tire is in back, it can't spin them anyway.

you lose the option of cross rotation even if you have the same size tires but they are directional tires..you'd be able to only rotate them front and back, not side to side nor diagonally. So just go staggered

Good point, when time to rotate tires just dismount and mount tires in puting the out side on the inside

Going stagger has the aggressive look - echoing most of the members, the downfall is the inability to rotate - but looking at a rear view of a staggered setup - its aggressive. good luck!
