Bilstien or KYB springs/shocks ???

Which is better? Both use VOGTLAND springs.

I'm looking for a very smooth ride (better than stock) and a bit of lowering.

Any help / opinions???

I don't have any experience with KYB shocks but I didn't even know they made shorter sport springs for lowering; just stock I thought. Bilsteins are great but a bit more aggressive than stock but I like that. If you're lowering then get the Bilstein Sports because their shorter and the HD's are stock length. By the way, if you don't want a really harsh ride then I would stay away from Vogtland springs. I just rode in my buddy's car last week and it's really stiff. I would go with H&R's or if you can really afford it, go with the KLEEMANN suspension set up. Good luck and post some pics...

I don't think the V's are that stiff except over expansion joints. Jimmy, I told you to get your butt over here and see for yourself.

Yeah man, I thought they were a bit more harsh than the H&R's though...I am planning a trip out there for sure this time around the middle of July. I'll hit you up mang!

Thanks for the help

Ebay has both a KYB set-up and a Bilstien. One says 1.3" drop the other 1.4".

Where do I find info on the Kleeman set-up.?

I compensated for that by putting bilstein shocks in So now it is perfect with eibach spring/bilstein shock combo.

We've probably crossed this bridge before but I can't remember. What size spring pads are you using???

I found the Kleeman site - but I didn't see anything about pricing or that you could buy the product anywhere?

So, from what I read here the eibach spring/bilstein shock combo might be what I'm looking for. I'm looking for a soft cushy ride still with just a little lowered stance.

I was about to ask the same thing Jimmydageek asked about the spring pads. What size do you have front and rear?

Thanks again for the comments!

By the way, the thicker the spring pads the "cushier" the ride but the thicker the spring pads, the higher it will sit...

3s, I had 1s before but the rear looked dumb because the tire was inside the wheel well.

This is a picture of my car now. #3 pads in front and rear, bilstein shocks, eibach springs. (sorry for the bad quality, it was taken on my phone)

Nate

That is one gorgeous car !!!

Thanks for the info. again. I think I'll take your suggestion and go with a similar set-up.

What is the spring pad range? 1 being the thinest - to 3? 4? being the thickest???

Lastly, is there a site to purchase the Eibach springs that has the best price or the shocks? And what are the part numbers for the #3 pads? Is there a place other than the stealership to get the pads?

Thanks again

You can check the pad number by feeling the bumps on the pad itself

i have leftover pads from my project. i can check to see which sizes
after work today.....or dealer....or....

dbl check to see what you have first. mine were 3s in front and 1s in back

Ahhh! I see (a picture is worth a 1000 words) Thanks Raymond!!!

That's info. helps. So a number three would probably be the 13mm then (seeing as the part number has the 3 in it).

Thanks Again!!!

Raymond - did you lower yours? and if so - what did you use for lowering?

i have 99 E320. i settled for.....
from #1 to #4 rear
left it at #3 front (no change)
Vogtland purple springs
Bilstein Sports shocks
....but during the trial/error/tuning process, I had also tried
some combination using the following...

Bilstein HD OE length
Koni Sports - shorter, yellow body adjustables
#1 pad in rear
#1 pad in front

at the end, i'm left me a nice little more than 1.5 finger gap at
both ends. I needed more gap due to the offset and tire size I
have with the wheels/tires I am using -- take offs from an E55,
which is 245/40, ET30 FRONT; 265/30 ET39 rear (from memory).
front fender needed to be rolled a scootch. overall lowering came
to about 1.5" front and rear.

after (been too busy to reshoot better pic)

here is nice thread with lots of ideas and comments....

Thanks again and again Raymond!

I'll have toread through the other thread again tonight -but I glanced through it and it is a great thread.

I see you used the Vogtlands

I'm not sure if I'll use those or the H&R's??? I definately do not want a harsh ride over the worn (maybe even worn-out) stock ride.

I'm still undecided between the Renntech or H&R springs? I know I'll go with the Bilstein sport shocks and I'm not sure yet about the pads - but will probably stick with what Raymond has set-up.

So Renntech or H&R's? Anyone know the difference in ride?

I did what Raymond did. My car came with #3 front, #1 rear. I then changed the rear to #3 so it would look even. With my setup, i have a finger gap in the front and back.

ack...i updated my post above. i actually changed the rear from #1 to #4
pad...not #3 as previously stated. the Vogtlands were settling in pretty
low. I cannot lower the front any more than the factory #3 pad because of
the large front tire combined with low offset. so i had to move the rear up a
scootch so it didn't make the car appear as though the front was pointing
towards the sky.

Well, after all the replys and reading through all the threads -I purchsed this today.

http://www.kwautomotive.com/content/marken/kw.html

Now it's just a matter of getting them in once they arrive.

Can't wait.

On a side note, I've had nothing but good luck with my car so far and any little repairs I've had have been relatively cheap comparred to the Buick I had before this. So, the wife has been happy.

When I told her I needed new struts, she said go ahead. I ordered the coil over set-up and told her the price (not telling her it was for the coil overs) and she said - oh, that's not to bad - she thinks I just bought struts.

So, driving the Benz has it'sadvatages sometimes when I want to spend a little extra She thinks it's just the high price of driving a benz.
