Transmission Error Code P0740

I have a 1997 E320. When connected to a OBD generic tester, I get an error code: P0740. The car and transmission appear to be working fine. What does this mean and what is the recommended repair?

do you have your obd tool?read all the codes and clear them.then see if the code trips again,if it does you may have a faulty trans solenoid ,How is it shifting?Usually if it is the tcc circuit it will be acting up,because the solenoid is not getting voltage across the system and wont let the tc lockup function work as it should.hopefully it is just a moisture issue or a gremlin that appears and goes away, since you don't seem to have problems with how she runs, that may be what happened.

Thanks for the reply. It appears to be the transmission solenoid but how can you determine which solenoid? I think there is more than one solenoid. Is there another test to determine which solenoid it is?

Torque converter clutch solenoid takes input from the ecu and sends that signal to the solenoid to lock it up at cruzing speed and give you better fuel econ. Can't remember where I saw one on sale but give germanstar a call and they can get it for you and even provide info on how to replace( I think) someone had a post on it so maybe a search. If the cel is not on ,I would just clear the code and see if it comes back.Have you noticed a big drop in fuel econ at highway speeds? That's where it will really show up,but with obd it should show a cel and a code.the other solenoid in the trans is the kickdown solenoid and that has it's own special code.
