Malfunction messages (ABS, ESP)

ABS-SYSTEM + BRAKE ASSIST (BAS) + ESP malfunction messages.

Does anyone have that problem before?
Based on the Manual, a malfunction has been detected. The Brake system functions in the usual manner, but without ABS. Yes, it does, however I feel heavy when turning the steering wheel (like no power steering).

Anyone has an idea what's going on? The car only has 8K miles.

:o

Thanks

If you notice a change, it's definitely a problem but I've had that error occur 2 times and both times it was just a faulty relay so it was a quick fix covered under warranty. Turn the car off, restart and see if you still get the error messages. If it doesn't come back, it's probably just a glitch. Either way, bring it in and get it checked out.

You indicated that your brake system is operating but without ABS, how did you come about this conclusion? Did you do some hard braking and the ABS system didn't kick in? If so, definitely bring the car into the dealer for service ASAP.

As far as the steering is concerned, ABS-SYSTEM + BRAKE ASSIST (BAS) + ESP malfunction messages, should not affect steering. If so, then definitely bring the car to the dealer for service.

Usually the malfunction messages you just posted indicates a broken relay or switch that needs to be replaced. Check to see if all your rear brake lights are lit at all times regardless of depressing the brake pedal. (Leave the car running, go to the rear of the vehicle and see if all brake lights are on). If this is the case, it's a broken switch/relay for the brake lights and would pop up ABS-SYSTEM + BRAKE ASSIST (BAS) + ESP malfunction messages. This would problem would not be as serious as a lack of ABS or power steering, but you should take it in because no one can tell when you are braking.

Speed sensor

Quick update: The Speed sensor needs to be changed. They don't have the part, so they keep my car for another day.

DarkLCD,
due to the speed sensor, when the ESP system is not working properly, it may affect the power steering!

ABS + ESP Control Unit

FYI

They changed the Speed sensor but they couldn't fix the problem. Now, they think they need to change the ABS + ESP Control Unit. Unfortunatelly, they have to order the part.... and who knows .. what's next

I had the same problem happen to my car; it actually happened during the wintertime, so after the malfunction lights (BAS ESP and ABS lights) came on, ESP, ASR, and the ABS didn't work. Apparently it was a faulty BAS and ESP unit, so they ordered me a new one and had it within a day. After they replaced that unit, I had the check engine light come on a few short days later. Supposedly a faulty O2 sensor. Good luck!

Paomien,
You're right. I got exactly the same problem: a faulty BAS and ESP unit. So, they changed:
1. Speed sensor
2. Cable Harnes ?
3. Control Unit ?
4. ESP Control Module.

I heard the old ESP Control Module is too sensitive, could send a faulty signal. Hope everything is under control now

On my 2001 E320 I had 3 malfunctions; abs, bas, esp after looking in the manual it said to have it checked by MB. But for ESP I noticed it said to turn the staring wheel all the way to left and then all they way to right. After doing that I turned of the car and turned it back on... and the message was gone and I drove it for about half hour it never came back until yesterday.

This is funny...!!
I decided to look at the wheels for any visible faults, when I looked at the left front wheel it had a piece of cloth that can be seen through the wheel pokes, as I was pulling it out it kept coming ... i thought it would be a small piece of cloth but it turns out to be a twin size bedsheet... lol, it was all wrapped up in the wheel and disc. My brother left some fabrics on the floor of our garage to soak water during winter so it does not go in the basement. I must have been driving with that bedsheet for a while. Anyway, after I took it out the malfunction messages went away... i'll see how it goes today.

I hope I did not damage anything...!

That is a funny story, with a bedsheet in the driveway.

Well..., not funny anymore because those three ABS, BAS, ESP malfunctions came back on yesterday. I have to take it to shop this weekend. I think bedsheet did cause some demage unless it has to do with wheel alignment I had done two weeks ago?

I know I have a W211

but found this here.

I developed the exact same problem today, with 9,300 miles on the car.

Steering felt heavy turning out of my garage this morning, and ESP, BAS, and ESP warning messages all on.

Guys,

Please do a search on this forum before getting ripped off. I had the same problem and it was the "stop lamp switch", my car had 27K when the problem started.

Will call dealer Monday.

Its under warranty, but this is my second electronic gremlin, first was an airbag malfunction.

I'm just getting a little nervous that this car is not to be owned outside of warranty, and even with a warranty, what a pain to go to dealer with problems more frequently than oil changes.

I had the ABS, ESP, BAS error in my car and had to change "stop lamp switch" which is located around brake pedal costs around $25-30 if you can do it yourself. MB guys told me for this error no reset of memory required.

Angry

STOP pressing the brakes too hard and dirve liek maniac. This will not happen. Just reset it by turning the car off. Then start the car. While it is runninh, turn the stearing wheel all the way to the right, wait 2 - 5 seconds and all the way to the left and wait 2- 5 seconds. Turn off the car. Then turn it back on. It should not happen again.

My BAS light has been lighting up but has stopped. It wouldn't to it everytime I started the car as well. I assume it isn't a real BAS malfunction but maybe a low charge or the others listed above.

BTW how is BAS supposed to be activated? I can't seem to do it? (Just to see for once)

My light also came on yesterday in my S500.

Yesterday, I went for a emissions/Air Care test, and they plugged something right under the dash board....

Then after the test, the ABS lights stays on, and 2 Malfuctions: BAS + ESP..

I called the dealer, and they're like oh its norma it'll turn off after a whilel.....

So later or tomoloe, I'll drive the car some more

If the malfunction keep coming back then you might want to change the "stop lamp switch" costs about $25-$30 it is easy to change. If you take to dealer it shouldn't cost you much either.

Same problem with M class

On my ML430 I had the BAS and ESP lights come on intermittently and then permanently. No change in steering wheel feel. I tried turning the steering wheel trick. It worked for a while. I replaced the brake pedal switch (10 minute job). That fixed it. It is probably the same switch used across many of the models. I've read in these forums how the dealers replaced half the car before getting to the switch. The other 'fix' was replacing the battery.

Same here

I had the same problem it happen to me twice;Once after breaking too hard at a stop light, but after I parked for about 10 minutes with engine off it went away. The second time was right after I got the car serviced and had to get my rear brakes done. I tried the steering wheel thing(left-right) nothing happened, then I made an appointment with the dealership but the message went away after a few days.

It has been over 5 months and no problems whatsoever!!!

Good luck Phungpho getting your car fix.
