Catalytic converter

How many miles did you have on your E320 when the Cat started rattling and/or when did you get it replaced? And how much did you pay?
I have a 2001 E320 with 71000 miles and I hear it rattling at around 1500 rpm. I thought it was just a heat shield but the mechanic said the cats are going?

My 97 e420 cat just now started rattling at 195,000 miles. Not too bad!

Have you tried those cats yourself? Does that setup really work? Do you need two cats per pipe or one?

The cat converter will eventually go out. You will hear rattle, and it'll get louder and louder.

Learn from my mistake: when it come to Cat converter, go with the aftermarket one. I spent close to $2K for a pair of OEM, and it's the biggest waste.

Find an aftermarket unit (just the cat converter), and a muffler shop and willing to cut the OEM cat from the existing pipe, and connect the aftermarket unit in, and you will be set, and save at least $1500.

The only

addition I have is,sometimes cats just fail, but the caveat is in a properly running engine, they will last for 150,000 plus,so you need to check that it was just a faulty cat and not some underlying problem, oil blow by,misfires ,bad injector, all can ruin a cat pretty quickly. So rule them out,or risk ruining another cat. Also check for codes, that the secondary o2 sensor, thats the ones post cat,did not get taken out by the faulty cat. They are an easy replace and not to pricey for bosch oem.If your pipes are good, and benting pipes get pricey,so if it's good why replace the whole pipe and cat system, instead just r/r the cat, sort of like the maf insert, why replace all that plastic when it is the sensor part that failed.

Hi

In some countries, cat is a must but in my country, its not mandatory, maybe now. My cat gave up on me a couple of months ago, and replaced with a silencer with kick back...not the straight thru type. The sound seem okay and fuel consumption looks fine.

Started rattling at 155k miles. Removed both cats and put straight pipes...exhaust sounds better and no more cat rattle. No check engine light either
