first u gotta ask urself if u gettin staggered wheels or not.
up front u can go 235/35/19...safe option or 235/30/20
at the rear, assuming you getting staggered wheels, 265/30/19...safe option or 265/25/20
35 offset is safe for both sizes, but would also depend on the width of the wheel.
thats my car on 20's

Do you
value your ride quality? If so don't go 19 or 20in,unless you're a poser.18 in max if you want any sort of ride quality,go to the sponsor section in tires and wheels, post a thread there and they will give you the best size and offset specs.Search raymonds posts on wheels and drops, tons of great info.If you go with the 20's or 19's you will rattle over every bump, possibly crack wheels if they are cheap, rattle your teeth out,and ruin the nice benz ride quality.

safe bet compromise 17 in et 37 rear,17in et 34 front 265/40 rear 235/45 front.

Maybe
but not as nice a ride as 17's,and definitly not as nice as 16's.A nice set of 17's with the right drop, fills the wells nicely for the eye appeal, and side wall wise gives you enough roll value to protect the rim and ride quality. Those 1.5 inch sidewalls just look to ricer to me,and that's just my own preference.Everybody has to decide on what they like,I would try to find a member near you that will let you see and test the ride, before going with 20's,that is a lot of money to tie up if you end up hating the ride.I have seen quite a few members go back to their old wheels after not being happy with how the ride changed.or the tires rubbed,or contact patches on turns and bumps,or cracked rim on a RR track.

In support of ohlord's comment on 17s...
17s are really a nice balance between ride and handling, just be sure to carefully calculate the drop and front/rear rake ...

Thanks OL! Still in the body shop, paid them a little visit. I was impressed with the quality of work...it looks eerily new underhood with most of the zinc/cadmium plated hardware and components gleaming back at you, fresh hoses, clamps, paint looks flawless, and hasn't even received a final buff on the clearcoat yet. A little extra cost job I paid for while it is in the shop: paintless ding removal and full paint recondition: they lightly wet sanded the entire car (except for the freshly painted new front clip) with 3000 grit and then compounded it out to pure liquid gloss black perfection. It is as close to showroom as I could imagine it might have been in 1997. I will post some pics when i get it home. It still won't be ready until early next week. This shop is good; they do collision and detail work for more than one high-end exotic dealer in the Atlanta area. I saw some amazing Italian coachwork there. I am surprised that they gave such attention and detail to my 10-year-old garden variety MB!

The 1010tires.com site has a tech section that will calculate tire size and offset when upsizing wheels. I went with 18" on my E-Class and still had a great ride along with the good looks.

Hey E-Klasse
While you are here(thanks for the wheel tip above).while here don't you have info on rear shelf removal to help out the newbie that has some dead speakers and posted a thread this a.m.

that wheel offset calculator they have is a handy starting point for figuring out what might fit. Thanks

I told him that he has to remove the rear seat back to get at the screws for the rear shelf. If both speakers are not working I didn't think it was the speakers that were the problem but the amp or head unit that drives them.
