My E320 gets good gas mileage. Is it, among other things, due to having three valves per cylinder? It seems that one big valve would have more breathing area than two in the same space. What is the reason?

300E a couple 1994 w124wagon E320 Wagon/,1971MGB Track/Rally, MG Midget Autocross ,2000 E320 wagon.
the older had 4

the change to the v6 and the new 430 engine had 3, 2 intake and one large exhaust valve that the engineers found worked to better max. evac of the cylinder.the two intakes work to max air flow into the cyl and actually total more sq.in of space then a large single valve in the same area. The single exh valve creates more torque at usable rpm ranges the same way proper exhaust tubing size and intake length does.Plus it allowed higher exhaust temps which creates lower emissions.
That plus the high compression are what make these engines such jewels.
