2003 E320 Wagon
Certified Pre-Owned Service Requirements

I just puchased a 2002 E320 4-matic wagon from my local dealer. It was a certified vehichle with 1 year of warranty coverage.

I assumed, maybe incorrectly, that the certification meant that they had taken care of any routine maintenance that was due. The FSS is saying that the B Service is due in 800 miles and it seems to me they should have done that as part of the certification. Also, based on the age and the requirements in the owners manual, it should have new spark plugs, brake fluid, fuel filter and a few other items. I think that the car should have had these things done before they sold it as a "certified" vehicle.

It was my fault that I didn't check it first, but I am wondering if anyone knows if part of the process that they are supposed to go through in the "certificiation" is making sure all required maintenance is up to date.

Did you try looking at MBUSA.com to see what "certified" means in their jargon? I'd start there.

Plugs don't get done 'til 100k miles.

They may have performed the required service and overlooked resetting the FSS.

Looks

like you may be out o luck, the inspection requires that they check maint records, carfax reports, has under a certain amount of miles etc.130 point inspection, bla bla bla...........don't know how long you've had the car,but nothing in the pre owned says they will do maint interval before it is due. They check that all intervals have been done,on time, but they are not going to do them before time. How many miles?plugs are due at 100k.

You can do your own service, record it in the manual and they have to honor the warranty.save 500-1000 bucks,do it right and screw the f in dealer.
ohlord

you might very calmly ,and I caution calm!bring up this issue with the dealer management, plead you case and see if they will offer some sort of solution.Worth a try......
good luck

Spark Plugs

The manual says 5 years or 100k miles and the car has been in service for 5 years. The website is pretty vague on what certification includes, but it does say they check the various oils (engine, transmission, axle, brake fluid, etc). I don't know what check means, but it seems to me that it should mean check the levels, and if the recommended life has ended or will end soon it should be changed. Spark plugs were also supposed to be "checked" so to me they should have been changed given the age in years.

That five

year thing is so they can screw you every five years for several hours of shop labor@$120-$150 per hour and $15-$18 bucks per plug. Most diy'rs do it at 100 k and the plugs still gap oem,and the car runs like the wind.
Change the trans fluid and filter ,that is one thing even they admit now they got wrong...diy over on benzworld.org w210 forum diy section.
ohlord

the cert process looks to be nothing more then a glorified b service.Check everything(supposedly)and then charge you $475 or more for what amounts to topping off fluids, checking belt and hoses condition and an oil and filter change. All diy items.............
and there is no way in hell, with all the work it takes to get at the plugs under the coil packs(not hard to do,but time consuming)that they would not have thrown plugs in.I say b.s. that they even checked them unless the car is at 100000 miles in which case they would not certify it anyway.
