i have an '02 E430 and have had other M-B's, diesel's gas, etc. the AM radio reception has never been a shining star here in NJ. In fact, i cannot get a vast majority of AM stations. some local staions come in, and 770 a powerful AM station comes in at times. the FM reception is fine, however.

I took it in when it was under bumper-to-bumper warranty and the dealer said what i already knew, which was: that's the way the AM reception is . . . .

i have an XM Commander Unit installed in the ashtray. it's awesome. of course, if you did that you'd have to use the "AUX" setting. Then you would be searching this forum for reasons why the Bass/Treble settings always reset to "Flat" . . . . . . . . . .

I love my E430 4-matic. Wouldn't trade it for anything . . . . except a new 2008 E63 . . .

The radio reception in my wife's Lexus is amazingly great - anywhere, everywhere, BUT it can't touch the suspension, road feel, engine, dynamics etc. of the E-Klasse . . . .

What car and is this an Am or Fm problem? My AM was barely working, but the mechanic showed me where to bang on the headliner and it works great now (no kidding). There's a finicky amp next to where the in-window antenna is located and a careful bang will get it working again. I have a 2001 E320 4matic wagon.

no need to whack on it,and possibly damage it,just open the little cover in the liner behind the rear driver side window and make sure it is hooked up.

i had a problem similar to what you are experiencing. except my CD player take hours to warm up before it starts playing CDs. End up replacing the deck when I installed the navigation and upgraded the audio system in my car.

I banged on the headliner behind the rear passenger door and to my amazement the AM works again. I would like a better fix than that though, can anyone tell me the proper way to get the headliner off?

I don't see a door like you describe. Maybe that's for a wagon? I have a 2001 E430 4matic sedan.

No nav for me. This is the pillar behind the passenger door, right? The one the rear window is on?

Right, but how do you remove the cover? My seat belt goes through that as well, that's the piece we're talking about, right?

Yes lower the headrests and carefully pull towards you on the edge of the piece where it meets the roof. It's held down by clips which snap back into place when you're done. I've checked it out myself when I read this article. But had to do an engine project first (glowplug replacement) so maybe I'll have a go at the antenna problem today. Ohlord is my personal hero! We've had bad FM reception ever since we got this car and nobody could tell me where the antenna amplifier was.
