E280 1998, engine trouble after driving manual mode
I put the gear on P mode and turned the car engine on but it ran for a very short period then the engine died off again, the same while on N mode.
While the engine is briefly on it would respond very erratically when i press on the gas peddle and sometimes doesn't respond and just dies off again, there is no funny smell and all electrical systems seem to work fine, no over heating problem and weather temp. is 28 C.
in brief the engine starts fine but instead of keeping steady rpm it would slowly decrease until it shuts completely down, i want to fix it but i need the background before i get tossed around by greedy car mechanics.. am i in for a big pocket drain? tell me please what you think the problem is and how to fix it.
then you need to go to a good muffler shop and have them check the cat converters, could be one of them is partially blocked and that was the jolt and now the reason for your strangled engine.
I would start there and then proceed further if not solved.

Any good indie shop can scan the codes or put it on a scope. The scope will also show o2 sensor function and show cat converter failure.
I have just retrieved my car from the garage in a very good condition, the mechanic had to change or fix the following:
-changed what he called "air watch"
-changed one ignition coil
-changed crank sensor
-general electrical wiring maintenance
-cleaned the injectors
-changed engine seats. -previous vibration problem while car is idle-
I'm now 800 bucks poorer
but problem solved.
