Car hesitates, CEL on!
Hello all!!! Car is a 2001 E430 4-matic. This is my uncle's car and I'm trying to help him with the problem. Yesterday he was driving back home from work and went to pass someone and the car jus hesitated and bucked and would not get out of its own way. CEL came on. He pulled over, shut the car off, started again and CEL went off. Needless to say it came back on later and the car still won't accelerate hard. He said gas mileage is down, but symptom is not apparent during light throttle. I told him to go to autozone to get it scanned for codes (I keep reading about the harbor freight tool, but I don't think he's goign to buy it, and I live 700 miles away so...) so I can have a better idea of what is going on. I have read a few posts about MAF's going bad. Is this a typical problem for these M-B cars?
The only work done to the car was the battery was replaced last week. There is also another issue I would like to talk about, and that is the cat. I'm not sure how many cats are on these cars, but one has the insides loose and it rattles like crap. Tech at the dealer said it was a usual problem for these cars
I do have a question: Can you get a "high flow" cat to replace the stock one? Would it have any effect on the O2 readings?

located,if near a hb he really should get the scanner.Or go to autozone and get the codes read,they will be stored if the light is now out.

he can get oem universal cats and have a muffler shop splice them in for 50 bucks for the cat plus shop labor.
The cat is most likely the reason for the burp at speed.Get the codes but the cat needs to be fixed first before any other reading can be trusted.

Well, he told me later that the CEL was flashing when the symptoms show up so he's going to take it to the shop today or tomorrow. This shop is owned by an experienced ex-M.B. technician, and they do good work so there's where he is going. I'll tell him about the cat, though. Thanks a lot!

is flashing,he really should not be driving it.The car is most likely in limp mode and the cat is gone.If he goes to an indie shop they will most likely not install just the cats and it is going to cost him a grand or more.
How many miles on the car?he is under the 8 year warranty on the cats as long as he is not over 80,000 miles.
If under 80k send him to the mb dealer they will replace the whole cat.
