Please help: Annoying noise coming from gear selector

Fellas,
I'm hoping someone can help me out. A little while ago, I noticed a noise coming from my gear selector column. Here's what's happening:
-Sounds like a metal-on-metal rattle
-Only occurs at around 2100-2500 rpms
-I believe the shaft of the gear selector is causing the noise. My reasoning is because the sound gets muffled when I put pressure on the shift knob

Anyone had symptoms like this before?
Can the shaft get loose?
Has anyone heard of parts coming loose inside of that compartment?

I'm clueless, so any help is appreciated. Thanks,

My suggestion would to simply pop open the trim to take a look. It simply comes off if you try and lift it from the side where the cup holder trim starts. I had a similar rattle and popped open the trim removed the plastic piece around the gear selector wood trim, removed the small wood trim around the gear selector and found the legs of the small wood trim were missing on side which makes it sit uneven causing the rattle from time to time.
I simply cleaned the pieces and put it back together and pushed the plastic trim in harder and have not heard it rattle since if it starts again I will have to order the small wood trim piece or just get the chrome one. Hope this helps………..best of luck.

Thanks for the suggestion,
I figured that's what I'll have to do. I'll pull the console open and see what I can find. I'll post an update when completed.

722.6 there is no mechanical connection between the trans module and the transmission. You need to isolate the rpm dependent vibration, tires balanced?Worn uneven?

ohlord,
good suggestions. I just switched over to my snow wheels, and the noise still occurs at the same RPM. So I think I have ruled out the tires not being balanced properly.

It's your shifter bushings - happens all the time. One is accessible through the center console and the other is accessible from under the car.

I Would Suggest that You would take a look at one on a Lift and You WILL see
The Shift Rod Linkage that goes from the SHIFTER to the Transmission
ITS THERE..I have replaced SEVERAL shift rod bushings on the W210s

Its a Easy repair...best when raised on a lift

oh

the shift rod linkage, got ya the one that runs in tandem with the electronic control from the module.Never had one making noise .My mistake in not thinking of that possibility.so onto the possibility of that making the sound, when you shift into manual mode from drive slot it disconnects the shift rod and relays trans position via the module,so with the rod now not in contact the noise if it is the shift rod linkage bushing should not be present.Correct, Mark?

The Shift rod is connected from the Transmission to the Shifter.....

Your question that the possibility of the sound from the shift rod will NOT be in contact is NOT True..as the transmission is shifted P/N/D via the shifter
when its in D its STILL connected via the shift rod..only Upshift/Downshift is done via the contacts IN The Shifter..

Take a look at YOUR car then YOU will Understand how the shifter works..

Yep., the shift rod bushings sound likely. Have replaced a few of them.
-But the gearshift lever isnīt hard to remove and dismantle. Might also be something wrong in there.

Cheers,
