are ball joints easy to change?

NE1 got a pic of front suspension and joints. Dealer says a friends 02 E430 are loose. How do you test the ball joints for being loose after you lift the car off front wheels? Also dealer says his rotors are close to being replaced with 65k miles. NE1 know rotor thickness? thanks.

rotor thickness

is noted on the rim,if ridged or not mirror smooth anymore time to replace.
not enough material on oem rotors to safely resurface.
unloaded ball joints you can grab the tire 12 and 6 and rock it while looking at the joint,if he saw movement you will also.or if anyone can the specs and you have a dial indicator you can check wear.If failing don't let him neglect the r/r if they fail it gets real costly.
22 bucks each at autohausaz.com or 40 something for the really good ones.Replace both.alignment is a must after r/r
these guys carry hd control arm bushing so you might call and see if they have the hd ball joints for the w210

He's right. I did mine about 4 or 5 months ago. (Were talking lower ball joints here.) Its not that hard. You might need to rent a ball joint puller though. Also at that time I replaced the inner and outer tierod ends. That seemed to help alot with steering shimmy. You need to get an alignment after though............

As for removing the balljoints, I purchased a tool @ AutoZone, I think it was a pulley remover that easily tackled the task of removing the tie rods and the ball joints.... Tool was inexpensive, I think between $15-25

My lower ball joints came right off. Less than an hour for lifting, removing wheels, figuring it out, screwing around, etc. Of course, a proper lift and air tools make for quick work.

I forgot. What bit is used to remove the rotors. Is is a Hex bit or Star bit? What size? Thanks.

up top on sticky and on benzworld.org w210 section and on mercedesshop.com also I think.
make sure to do one side at a time so you can compare if you need to double check yourself and make sure to have all the parts on hand before you start the job.
