HID Ballast Mounting Location

I don't think I've ever heard this being talked about anywhere so here it goes.

Is it bad to put the HID ballast inside the light housing? I just got my kit and there is plenty of room inside the headlight housing. If I place the ballast inside then I won't have to make a hole in the back cover of the light.

Are there any risks involved? will there be heat build up? how hot do the ballasts get?

I have tried searching on yahoo about this question but there is never a mention of where not to mount the ballasts or any mention of mounting them in a place with ventilation.

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Mount it at the bottom, just at the OEM. Heat will kill the ballast (and probably melt the wiring) over the long run if you put it inside the headlight.

I mounted mine pretty clean , i will post you some pics tomorrow for sure. But do not mount them inside the housing, you will most likely get condensation inside there.

Thank you, Pics would be helpful. I thought the housing is air tight? maybe not though cause it needs a vent for air expansion.

I'm trying to figure out a way to keep these things from getting any water splashed on them from the road. are they safe under the headlights?

look where the factory mounts them: below, on the exterior of the headlight
housing....some will place them on the exterior of the headlight, on a vertical
plane.

if you have a chance to scan HIDPLANET dot com FAQs you'll also see where
folks have gone through great lengths to shield the ballasts from water....
through the use of sandwich containers, tupperware, etc....but they still
strive to ensure proper ventilation as well.

the greatest threat to solid state devices/components is HEAT
