Is
it not working?Do you have onboard diagnostics on the 97?

if so run them to see if it could be a sensor or some other malfunction causing the problem.
If low on r134a do as Mark said, have a pro locate the leak and fill it properly. No use having it all leak out again

The evaporator could be leaking. To test close all the a/c vents but the passenger vent. set the manual high blower a/c on. Then close the car over night. Next morning use freon leak detector insert into pass air vent, then turn key on. If the evap is leaking freon will be trapped in the plenum and when the fan blows the air out of the a/c duct the alarm will go off indicating freon inside the car. IF this happens your evap is most probably the problem. This might be where your leak is located. Hope it isn't ,, $$ to change. Best of luck.
