I think I just discovered the cause of a problem I thought I had. In my 99 E320, I was hearing popping noises (like something was shorting out) out of my speakers when the Sound System was on. First I thought it was just the AM signal(football games), but then I also heard it in FM and with a Tape running.
I was ready to take the car to the dealer when I noticed that when my cellphone (Nokia - sitting in the cubby hole below the Stereo) rings, the stereo picks up the signal and crackles.
The cellphone afterall is a transceiver and I guess the radio picks up the harmonics and amplifies them. I conclude the popping sounds (when the phone is not ringing) is from periodic updates that the phone does with the cellular system.
Has anyone else experienced this?

Yep...I think we all get it...I have learned to deal with it. But..it is cool..I can answer I my phone before it rings...Kind of a neat trick if you have a car full of people.

That's funny. I have the same problem with my AT&T Nokia (TDMA). This never happened with my Sprint CDMA phone, so it must have something to do with the network difference between TDMA and CDMA. ?? Interesting...

I have the same phone problem with my Motorola i85s (with Nextel service).
I have the phone mounted above the radio with a vent clip (from Best-Buy). Usually hear it when the phone rings or is turned on. Occasionally hear crackle on my way home too -- assume I'm passing a cell boundary. I've learned to live with it, but am thinking of moving the vent clip above the headlight switch to see if it lessens the problem.

Yes, I have the same clicking noise from the stereo. It happens with my Nokia 8260 TDMA phone placed in the little storage space immediately below the stereo. Unsure if there is any long term problem with the stereo or speakers, I now put the phone in the armrest storage.
Happy cruising..

Whew! I'm glad I wasn't imagining it!
My wife was convinced the occasional noise was coming from the speaker in the left back passenger door, so thinking that I must have lose wiring, I actually popped panel open reached in and unscrewed the speaker off to see if I had a lose wire. Of course I didn't.
Putting my cell phone in the armrest storage seems to be the quick fix.

Yes, my nextel cell phone always makes the buzzing sound, at least i can tell one someone calls me. Usually if it gets real bad just stick it in the armrest or throw it out the window
