OBDII & Check Engine Light for 99 E430

Folks:

This is my first post and I am impressed with all the knowledge on this forum. Here is my problem:

I have a 1999 E430 sedan. The check engine light came on with DTC of P0170 & P0173 (My local inspection station scanned it for free). I surfed the net including this site and the consensus was to replace the MAF. I purchased an exact Bosch replacement and installed it. About a day later the MIL went out. After that I purchased an OBDII scanner. I hooked it up and I erased the stored DTC codes. This reset all the tests and I had to do a drive cycle to complete the non-continuous tests. I am still trying to complete all tests as there is still one that needs to kick in (Secondary Air).

Now I am getting P0133 and P0170 as pending codes. My question is this an indication that I have another problem? What do these codes mean? Can pending DTC's go away by themselves ( I hope)

Thanks for your help.

Joe

You have

a lazy o2 sensor on bank 1 sensor 1 (pre cat) that is passenger side.It is most likely tripping the p0170 fuel trim value. When you only have one fuel trim code it usually is the o2 sensor. How many miles on the car?o2's are 100k mile replacement items.replace both pre cat o2 sensors they see the most action and wear out first.
autohausaz.com has them for a good price.

You can always clear the codes again and see if the ecu adapts to the new maf,by exact maf what do you mean?Ebay has lots of mafs that look and appear to be bosch but are not.Did you get the sensor from autohausaz.com or germanstar.net?Those you know it is the real deal.

Thanks for the reply

Ohlord:

Here is a more detailed background:

There is 55K miles on the car. We are original owners and pickle it. My wife does most of the driving and it is stop & go to work for her.

I just took it for another drive cycle that includes idle (2 min), drive at slow speeds (3 min) and highway at 55(15 min) and idle again (5min). I never exceded 3K in RPM and 60 in MPH.

I put my Gore Research Proscan on the car and the secondary air is still not ready. All other supported non-continuous tests are ready. The Check engine light did not come on and no stored DTC showed up. The pending P0133 & P0170 still show. The long term trim for banks 1 & 2 are now below -15%. (When the check engine light came on originally both values approached -30%).

I got the replacement MAF through Amazon at a great price. It is an exact replacement (you can not distinguish from original) that is stamped Bosch with the part # 0280217870.

To address your suggestion, I could erase the pending codes and see what happens, but then I have to go through the drive cycle again which is a real PITA.

Will this auto pass inspection with no Check engine light, No stored DTC's, all readiness except one, No freeze frame, but with two pending codes (P0133 & P0170)? We live in Georgia.

Ohlord, thanks for your help.

Most

states allow 2 not readies on the i/m
you may need to call them about the pending codes.

the real drive cycle
amazon, ebay those chinese clones have the same part number stamped on them so I always am suspicious when a maf is installed and it is from a non supplier instead of autohausaz.com or germanstar.net

how much did you pay?

Thanks again for your info. I will ask the local inspection guy re temp codes. I paid $120 delivered for the part which includes the insert. It is stamped "Bosch" and with the appropriate part number.

One other question, is there a good shop or repair manual that you would recommend for a 1999 E430? I prefer paper to CD's. If so where can I purchase it.

Thanks again for your help.

Question Star Manual

How is that Star manual on DVD that goes for about $200. They have one for the W210 through 2003. It looks real good, but wanted your opinions before I spring for it.

Thanks all.

It should be

less then 200 at most dealers.I have neither of the two but have heard from members that all the diys that they could contemplate were in the alldatadiy so for 12.95 worth a try,it is very inclusive and some of the diy's are written in more layman terms.
