Where is the chunk of metal?

The same thing happened to mine a couple of weeks ago. I suspected the cats, drove 50 miles to the dealer and they diagnosed it and had to order the parts. I then drove 50 miles back home, but took it out for a little gentle exercise (cats still rattling) a couple days later and heard a loud couple of clunks as if I had run over something. I checked the road and there was nothing there.

I never received what I'd call a satisfactory explanation on another forum so I'll post my experience here. The job is now complete, but since MB only replaces the exhaust pipe including the cats, what are the odds that part of the bad cat is lodged in the muffler or resonator? There are no noises indicating this that I can hear, but the tech who performed the work has since asked me if I hear any rattles. This leads me to believe that he suspects something also.

Thanks for any feedback.

So, they are replacing all cats on both sides. Anything else I need to look for when I pick it up?

If I were you, I'd ask them to tap the resonator and muffler to see if there is any evidence of material that made it back that far.

Not arguing with you ohlord but I was told that's what they used to cost. The service writer said that after so many of them failed M-B changed what they'll pay. In my case, both pipes w/cats were a little less than $1000 and the labor was $181. They gave me a N/C invoice but I saw the one they presumably send to Daimler for payment.

FWIW, it only took the guy about 2 hours so they pay approx. $90.50/hour and I have heard normal dealer rate, for us at least, is $129.

Some dealers

are still charging up to $1600 per side out of warranty.8/80 in some states has come down in price.
If both his cats both sides failed,Red needs to check why they failed.

Ohlord, I'm sorry then because I mis-understood the "out of warranty" part.

I was thinking the same! I just talked to them and they said my car is fighting them all the way! Should be done by 5 though.
