02 E430 4-Matic Possible Purchase
Hello everyone!
I currently work for a Ford/Linc/Mercury dealer, and we took in a 2002 E430 4-Matic with 58K miles on trade from a guy who drove all the way up from Ohio (I'm in Wisconsin). The car is immaculate. Not a single ding, dent or scratch. Silver with the Grey interior, new tires, new brakes. I am thinking about picking it up as a second vehicle to save my current car from the mileage. I currently drive a 2007 Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT-8 and the 12MPG with premium is killing me, not to mention I've had it for 8 months and put on almost 20,000 miles
Anyways, I can get the car for roughly 15,200 + TTL, which I think is a fair deal. Just curious as to any major issues I should look for. I've been reading all day today, and have come to the consensus that the issues I can expect are Sensor related, as well as MAF, loose cat, and the window regulators. Anything else? How/what are average maintenance costs for routine things such as Oil Changes, etc?
I have owned a 97 C280 sport, and my dad had a 97 E320, then an 02 C320, an 05 E500 4-Matic and currently drives an 08 E550 4-Matic Sport with all options. He loves them, as do I, just worried about long term reliability.
Also, what kind of MPG can I expect from this thing with about 95% city driving, takin it easy with a car like this. Not really gonna be beat on!

have given him 11k offer 14 if it is really clean.Diy is cheap,you can do plugs,oil,trans fluid etc.

mpg mostly city 4matic m113 engine about 17-19 some hway mixed in 23.Cats would still be under warranty till 8years or 80 k miles.MAF is only about a dred and a half ,plugs are not till 100k.Check all pixels on displays.Get it inspected by a pro if you are not an advanced diy'r.Plenty of real nice cars with hidden issues so be safe,investigate

What options do you have on it?
I would offer somewhere around 12K since you work for them. You can negotiate the price. 8 cylinder used car prices is coming down due to gas prices.

Well, here is the deal, we took the car in on trade for $15K, so I cant really get it for much less than that unfortunately. Only had the car for about 3 weeks, so it's still a fresh car. If it's still on the lot by the end of September, and the price is down, then I'll jump all over it!
I'm definitely a DIY guy for the most part, unless it is super involved, I can pretty much tackle anything on my own or with the help of friends. The car is loaded with every option except NAV, if that was even available in an 02....

I've bought cars where on the final bill, they added 3k to the purchase price and 3k to the trade in value. When questioned, they said it was for accounting purposes but it doesnt affect your purchase price. Probably gives them more leverage when the wholesalers show up to offload their used inventory.
There is still room on that price and they'll get far less from a wholesaler. See if you can find out the price they sold a new car to the trade-in customer.

The customer purchased another used car. I am the finance guy, so I actually did the delivery. $13,000 actual cash value on the trade, and sold the "new" used car for a profit of about $2,500, got asking sale price for it. After the saftey, new tires & brakes, and all the other BS that goes into setup for the lot, he's got $15,186 in the car (including a "pack")
The dealership I work for is very cut and dry, we dont fudge numbers at all. It's a touchy game, and one that I will not play, especially as a Finance Mgr, that's my *** on the line!
KBB Excelent Trade is $15,000 down to $12,600 for fair condition, so the car seems to be on the money. Auction value on the car is in the $13,500 range.
I might be able to get it for around $14,200 if I really want it. Either way, even at $15,200 it's not a bad deal from what I can find online and other cars with similar miles and condition....

I might be forgetting something but you get the idea. If you are that curious, ask and I'll get out my sales 2001 sales literature, options should be the same.

I dont think it has the sport package, but it has the moonroof, rear sun shade, xenon/washers, heated seats (not sure about ventilated), no phone though, which I could really care less about.
Didn't realize there were so many options!

Yes there were quite a few. and I forgot about Parktronic and to mention that if the phone is original equipment it would probably be obsolete anyway (Motorola StarTac). You could also say the 8-cylinder 430 engine is an option since the base model was the 6-cylinder 320 and those extra 2 cylinders added about $5000 to the original selling price. Furthermore, the 430s are much less common than the 320s so there is an element of rarity there.
If the seats are ventilated you will see 2 different icons on a multi-function dashboard switch; the upper that looks like rays for heat, and the lower with a fan for ventilated. I use the cooling feature much more than the heating but it's not that impressive. 4matic was another option I forgot but I see that it has that, probably handy in WI. If it has Voice Recognition, there will be a small stalk on the right on the steering column; if not, you will see a nub there.
In any event, good luck if you purchase the car and thanks for the pics!

Thanks! And thank you for all the info! The car may be sold as of right now, but if it is, I'm also looking at a 2001 Audi A6 4.2Q with 87K miles, well under the $10,000 mark!!!!

I would stick to a Mercedes Benz car. There are also W211 newer body style E-class for sale around $17K.. I personally like W210 for now.

Problem is, getting up to 17K is pushing the limit. I was pushing the limit at $15K. I'm trying to keep a lower payment as this is going to be my DD. I already spend $650/mo on my other car, want to keep this one under 300 if possible....

Do yourself a favor and research that Audi A6 thoroughly. I know a woman who leased one of that approximate vintage and she said it was junk.
