Engine code Scanner
Who has one of these, and how much can I get one for?
I am a DIY'er, but I have found that without one of these, life can become complicated.
Anyone have a bad experience with one?

Any OBDII scanner will read most engine codes. They are pretty generic.
If you want to see live data and data from other modules (trans, abs, srs, can, etc., etc.) you would do best with a MB laptop running SDS. Big bucks.

About $60 bucks
great for the diy'r that does not need a real time scanner ,just the casual user
item 94169 scans ,clears, reads i/m codes for smog readiness.nICE UNIT EASY to use and always post codes here before diving into a job, about 80% of the job in diagnosis is interpreting the codes, and most members that have been doing it a long time can help you on the path towards nirvana![Smilie](https://mbworld.org/forums/images/smilies/smile.gif)

drive across the river or order it online
http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/cta..._stores.taf#NJ
if you go to the store they will price match the online price if you take a copy of the ad.
for $199 if you are an advanced diy'r www.autotap.com laptop based real time scanner short of the SDS the next best thing if you learn how to use it properly.

If you
need to go leave a deposit ,which is what most now require and take it home and return it that is fine for the one time user.A few trips while making repairs and the unit pays for itself.the added benifit is it just gets tossed in the tool box and is handy on trips.I have helped many a stranded MB owner on my travels,so I probably get more use out of it than most.
Autozone has refused to clear codes at some stores and other times the diagnosis that the kid gave the owner of the troubled car was so far off base they spent money on repairs that did not have to be done at all.
That's why i suggest the obd2 hh scanner.

Thanks
Very good information!
And what do you know, I don't even have to cross the river. Harbor Freight is right down the street from me.
