Willing to upgrade, however do not see what can be a nicer replacement. 210 is really classy car, real old Mercedes school. 211 looks quite cheap and less comfortable. 212? Maybe, still insufficient data to judge. 220? It is off production, a quite pity, because 221 is really good car however not so catchy eyes as 220. What about other makes? Looking in Jaguar, FX? 5 series BMW do not look good. A6 is nice, but I didn’t like its freeway feel. So it looks like I will stick with 210 for awhile.

well, since you enjoy anecdotal evidence, and are highly uninformed in these matters, let me share something with you.

1. 18mpg? since when? My 4matic with heavy 18" wheels put down 24mpg on the highway, and 19 intown. In fact, it gets BETTER gas mileage than my E430 4matic. Plus, I don't care. I enjoy driving it so much that I wouldn't care if it got 10mpg. I can afford it.

2. "tough time taking down a V6?" One, who cares, Im not racing anyone. I never go WOT, I barely get over 3000rpm. I don't care one bit about the speed of the car. However, car and driver puts the s500 4matic at 6.1 seconds to 60, and a 14.6 quarter mile. This almost identically matches the E430 4matic. The e320 is looking at a low 7 second 0-60 time, and a mid to high 15 second quarter mile. In other words, you are dead wrong...again.

3. That consumer reports rating was for the 00-03 220. I agree, I would never own a pre-03 220. The 05-06 were found to be quite reliable, and the start to MB's climb back to quality.

so, in other words, enjoy your little station wagon, and keep your ignorant comments about other mercedes models to yourself.

Keep

your boat, which in other reviews and real life comparisons gets kicked by 430's at nearly the same power and 600 lbs lighter.Just because you are embarrassed by the poor choice of car you made does not make it a necessity to always be so defensive about it.Comments on other models? since I've owned several all the way back to when my wife was one of the only 2 service writers at what would 35 years later become one of the largest MB dealers in the country, are warranted and valid and an s class whether it be an 01 or 05 is still a tank.
Even your own review is lacking in praise for the S class.
"if I value reliability and lower repair costs, moving to a 220 would be a poor
choice."
give me my good old reliable little w210 wagon anytime, over a model that I even have to consider what will go wrong next
to each his own

Considering the horrible resale value of these cars I think I'm keeping mine with 146 K miles and rust all over which I'll have to fix myself. Considering I got the car for 7 g's i'm not too mad. but it is a Mercedes and it has W124 genes in it and a hood star so I love it.

...blah blah blah....

we've already established that each person can evaluate their own situation
and determine the criteria which is important to them, e.g. cost effectiveness,
mileage, reliability, track record for repair costs, etc. since each person's
situation is different (income, skill set for needed repairs, free time available
to obsess with the above), I don't understand the need to try and convince
each other that what works for one person......must also apply to another
person.

"relative worth" = fuzzy logic, ie the answer varies for each person.

In City Slickers, Jack Palance held up one finger....to illustrate "the secret to
life" ....and ultimately defined as only something that each person determines
for themselves.

If I were to trade in my E, I would probably get around 13k for it. Those 13k would not buy a car that could compare to my E. Not even close. So I think I'll keep mine.

I want a C63, but can't bring myself to practically give the E away. I don't like the 211 and what I've seen of the 2010 E doesn't float my boat. The S is nice, but too "old man" for me. I would rather have the 7 BMW than the S.

With all of the repairs we've done on the car so far we'll hang onto it for years to come. If we sell/trade now we won't get much for it and the new owner is going to laugh his *** off for years! I still love the looks of the car so I'm happy with it anyways.

If this 210 is anything like my old W124 was with 300K mi on it then I too will keep my wagon. That car was sold with no rust or tears either. Just took a trip to Lake Erie from Pittsburgh and averaged 30.4 mpg at 63mph in the 210 wagon. It cruises in style and people admire it for what it is a very stylish wagon. It will very well get on to the 168mph rev limiter that Brabus has if I am so inclined, (track day with the cobra club at Pocono). I do not wish to drive what everyone else has and it is fun being different. I agree with prior comments about allowing people their differences and different tastes. Do we really have to resort to calling eachother names just to prove your point is better?! I thank Oh lord for the thoughtful comments he provides to me and to others. You do not have to agree nor follow his advice. For those who disagree with him or others, just keep your low grade comments in check. It is nice to have a forum like this instead of having to go to the dealer. My 210 does not have any rust and has no cracks in the dash. Minor things as with any car. Nothing will last forever. I am thankful to have this site to learn from and my 6 year daughter and I have fun going on trips with the club and working on the wagon and the three sportcars that we share. Now about that new CLK Black with the 6.3 AMG motor at 505Hphttp... My daughter thinks its very shiny but wants a pink one. have a great weekend to all.

2000 E430
I just recently upgraded from my 1995 E320 to a 2002 E430 4Matic. What a difference! As others have stated, if the 02' is anything like my '95, I'll be keeping it for quite awhile. The car runs, rides, looks great, and the 430 provides a great amount of 'umph' for me.

As with the '95, since I took such great care of it, people always thought the car was more new than it actually was. The '02 E430 is no different, I get a lot of looks in the car and most think the car is somewhat new. I personally like the styling better than the newer E's, although the 08 E's look badass.

I'll keep this car until the repair costs (or gas prices) go up too high. My next car will likely by an AMG though. I don't care what model it is or what arguments you all keep having in this thread, any AMG is an upgrade.

Can't wait to see how well this thing can get me to the ski slopes.

I normally wash my car by hand, but late last year I took it to a car wash and the attendant was trying to fold the mrrors in. I told him that they don't and he said "I thought all new cars had that feature?", so I had to tell him the car is 5+ years old (at that time, now 6+). He said "Oh, I thought it was new".

I own newer and more expensive cars, but my 97 E420 is one of my favorites. Its still shows almost no discernible wear on the interior or exterior, is rock-solid with tight handling and no noises. The M-119 V8 is still very quick and has surprised many 3-series and Infiniti drivers. The leather on my low-mileage 99 SL500 shows more wear. I am tempted to buy an 03-04 S55 AMG since they are a relative bargain now, but I have reservations about the W220; my friend's S500 is in the shop more than it's on the road. The 03-04 E55 is in the same price range as the 03-04 S55, is a much better handling car and is not as dated as the W220.

Especially ugly is the non-sport S500 with the garish designo package, those butterscotch tan seats remind me of my old 91 W124 E300 wagon... The largest Atlanta dealer usually has a large selection of CPO W220s with heavy discounts on the designo package cars, yet no one seems to want them...not even the elderly.

Keeping mine

The W210 is built to last decades if well taken care of. Im keeping mine for at least 20 years--the newer ones look real cheap.

keeper...

I've had my 97 E420 for three years, in that time I've put 50k miles on it, and the only expensive non DIY repair has been the transmission module, and the V-belt.

No reason to sell a perfectly running daily driver. To the contrary I am going to put on 18 inch monoblocks, and I just finished lowering it. Next up, upgrade the tail lights to 2001 E430 stock units.

I have a 84 Porsche 928, when I'm done upgrading to monoblocks on the benz, I've been told the benz will drive somewhat like the Porsche. I can't wait...

almost sold it so i could buy an IS300 for a good deal, but then later on i changed my mind because im too in love with my w210

im in college and i got my w210 for about 7gs with 81k on it...it was in great condition, one owner who took very good care of it as i am now haha

plus the color of my w210 is Bordeaux red and i get so many complments on the color (especially from women ), i love it cuz it really compliments the car

someone said earlier that they were gonna buy one of the new benzes but they thought they were cheaply made, WHICH I AGREE WITH ONE HUNDRED PERCENT, the w210 looks like a benz, while all the new ones look just like regular cars and blend in (thanks to chrysler......)

Interesting, everybody I've talked to seems to love my "butterscotch" seats.

Oh, and I did a little search of the MB dealers in atlanta (RBM, atlanta classic cars, buckhead, etc) and they had a grand total of maybe 15 220s, none of which had the designo package.

Im surprised no one likes the designo package, given that it has a full leather dash, door panels, center console, suede headliner etc. Its my favorite part of the car. I also love the mocha black exterior. Not one negative comment yet, but a lot of people have come up to me to tell me they love it.

The car is literally worlds nicer than the 210. sorry.

I really like the 2000-02 E430 Sport in white, ideally with a set of Carlsson 1/6, suicidal4life has a beautiful example! There really is something very aggressive and timeless about the W210 that really manifests itself when the car has a mild suspension drop and period-correct 18 inch AMG or Carlsson rolling stock. My 97 E420 has been flawlessly reliable for the past 7 years, and I enjoy it even more after reworking the suspension and adding a set of AMG 3-piece wheels (I stole them from my SL500!)

Speaking of Carlsson, does anyone have a lead on a set of the 1/6 in 18" or 19" in silver with a 35 ET? Been looking for years, once every few months, a set shows up on eBay, but they are always in chrome. I've even been checking eBay Germany (www.eBay.de)

My 2001 320 with 102k on the clock will be with me until the end. She's earned my respect. It has a "feeling of solidness" that my 211 55 doesn't have. I still enjoy the Kompressor when I need to work out the testosterone in me however, I still favor my old 320's soul.

Yeah - suicidal4life's ride is sick...and getting sicker

Depending on how you feel about Craigslist -

http://losangeles.craigslist.org/sfv/pts/795079151.html

There are a few 1/6 evo's out in LA. I got mine from eBay with 40 & 45 offsets and added spacers.

I plan on keeping her and maybe adding a W208 clk55 (especially considering how much it would cost to Renntech or Kleeman the W210).
