Replacing front struts

It is time to replace my front struts on my W210 with 180k miles. They are squeeking and rebounding hard. Is it necessary to compress the springs while I do so or do I just need to put pressure on the lower control arm with a floor jack? I have the Mitchell CDROM manual but it does not address replacing the struts at all - worthless!

Thanks!

job finished!

I ended up buying Bilsteins from autopartswarehouse for $108 each with free next day shipping. The whole job took about 2 hours. It was longer since this was my first time. I wasn't replacing the springs so I only had to jack up the control arm and not remove the springs. Frontend drives like new again!
