A/C outage - an evil repair

I stopped by the shop today for some minor odds and ends, and there was a W210 E320 being worked on - a "$3000 repair". For what, I asked. A/C compressor needed to be replaced. The compressor is not cheap - around $600, but MB designed this car in such a way that the only way to get it out is to completely disassemble the center console, remove the dash and steering wheel, and pull out all the wiper assembly and everything else at the back of the engine bay. 18 hours of labor for a simple swap out.

On a 9-10k car, that hurts!

That can't be right - they must have meant evaporator. The compressor is an engine driven accessory which should be on the front of the motor. Or were they also replacing the muffler bearing, too.

Smile muffler bearing

You think the muffler bearing is funny, I need 1 replaced and they are not cheap to do. On a chevy it is a doughnut gasket maybe $40 including labor. On our cars its 3-4 times that.

And in the W124 it is about 13-17 hours depending on the shop and how good the tech is. Mine lasted 17 years before even needing to be looked at.

I agree it would have to be the evaporator , while we are discussing this its extremeely rare to have any problems with this no moving parts.
My old 123 300D is 28 years young and the aircon is still operating never had any service done to it. Sold some time ago but still on the road.
I am hoping my E270 will give the same so far it has.
Cheers, Manfred

I had my a/c compressor replaced a few months ago and it cost somewhere in the $2K range (I don't remember exactly - I try to block these negative things from my memory). It definitely did not take them 18 hours, because I got the car back the same day.

The dealer did it. However, I spoke to a friend of mine who has an indie shop and he said that the price was reasonable as the parts are VERY expensive. I could have had my friend do the work and save on labor costs, but his shop is over an hour away.
