Temp gauge on odometer display gone dim

My '99 E320 odometer/temp/clock display has gone a little dim. Where the temperature shows up it is not as bright as the odometer or clock. It's not a big deal but a little bothersome. I was considering changing the car soon and the car is in good shape but these little things may give prospective buyers a worse impression of the state of the vehicle.

Is this an easy or cheap fix? I suspect not. I have taken a photo if it helps with clarifying the issue.

There are bulbs in the back of the cluster that may have gone bad.

You will need 1 or 2 of these and the MB cluster puller, as there are 2 bulbs that are directly focused to the temp display.
I have the same problem ( also have a 99) , I pulled my cluster to get an idea what I was up against and did see the bulb placements but unfortunately did not have the proper bulbs at the time. I bought it from this guy on eBay and will be working on it this weekend....hope this helps

The bulb has gone out, get the properone from MB the cluster needs to be pulled with the hooks, MB charges 1 hr.

Cluster puller

Thanks for the info on the bulbs. I have a 1998 E320 wagon and have the same problem with the temp display. Where can the tool(s) for removing the instrument cluster be found? And how difficult is the cluster to pull?

this is the tool that you would need. Others have improvised with wire hangers

Insert puller at around the 10 and 2 oclock positions on the top portion of the cluster untill you feel that the pullers have grab onto the cluster tabs. Yank slowly outward but briskly
left to right. If it has never been removed it will be tight and require patience and some muscle for it to relase...You may also need to retract the steering wheel once the cluster has released ...... GL

have the whole boxed kit for $28 delivered.Hooks ,radio /climate control keys for the day when You need to replace climate control bulb also

2003 S210 3.8L Brabus wagon
The pulling of the cluster can be done with 4 flat dull blades (dinner knives will do and not steak) inserted top at 10 and two oclock and bottom opposite. Pull with left to right rocking motion gently out towards you. Once clear disconnect left and right harnesses on back. They reconnect only one way. Whole process takes about a minute once you find the right spot. It is quite easy.
