Clicks once- not start, twice, it starts
I need some help diagnosing a start problem on my 210
-1997 E420 (125k miles).
-no error codes
-no recent work, washing, etc
Today when I tried to start it made one click sound, and didn't start, then when I turned the key again no click and it did start. I repeated the steps a few time with different results- sometimes it starts fine, other times it clicks and I need to turn the key again.
My first guess was the solenoid and/or starter, but then I again I am not a professional mechanic... Any ideas...?

Sounds like
the battery is on the way out.Check the specific gravity and the voltage with a multi meter. After charging it fully overnight on a 10 amp charger. And then run the above checks 10 minutes after leaving the headlights on.To put a load on the battery, turn the lights off and test the voltage and then the SG.

If the battery checks out OK, it is going to be the starter. Some windings are getting open or shorted so it takes a special position to get it started.
The frequency of this (fail to start) will increase but it could take quite some time. I lived through this on my previous 1987 300TDT for about 2 years but eventually had the starter eplaced.
Keep a hammer or some heavy object in the car. If it does act up, you can hit the starter with the hammer and try again.

starter...
Ok, I'll check the output on the battery. I replaced the battery 17 months ago, so I'm guessing it's the starter. I replaced the alternator two years ago.
Does anyone have a writeup on the starter replacement...?
thanks,

thanks,
The problem went away, for now...
That's right, the problem is gone now.
One downside of lowering your car, you have to put more effort into raising it...So I haven't put the effort into raising it and climbing under it...

Park it with the right side on a curb so you can climb under her with that hammer suggested!
