Does the chassis serial number include the letter?

My VIN is WDBJF55F9TJ017888, which part is the chassis number?

J017888 ?
017888 ?

I am asking because I wanted to order parts (brake pads); one seller specifies:
"Brake Pad Set 96-97 E320 ; Rear with 1 Pin Retainer; OE Compound
For models with chassis serial number ranging from 379347, earlier version uses 2 retaining pins through pad. 1 set per car. $59.00 $49.98"

while another says
"96-97 BENZ E320 (for 96-97, one retaining pin) (for 96-97, chassis range: from A379347, one retaining pin)"

If I take the number without the letter, then the part would not fit (379347 is later than 107888); but with the letter then J107888 is later than A379347).

Which one is correct? Do the parts fit my car?

Thanks!

That was a weird VIN...

Not how it's used to be on a mercedes.. but anyhow..

WDB J F 55 F 9 T J 017888

WDB tells us this is produced by Daimler Benz in West Germany.
J tells us it's a W210
F tells us it's a sedan
55 tells us which model it is
F tells us it has seat belt, emergency pretensioners, driver and passenger front and side air bags
9 ?
T tells us it's produced in 1996
J tells us it's produced at Rastatt production plant
and the last six digits is the production/chassis number.

so in your case, the chassis number is lower than the chassis number the product fits on. BUT the chassisnumber listed is from the main production plant Sindelfingen, and the productions at Rastatt have their own production numbers. Which means that your car may be produced after the Sindelfingen chassis number on the product, even though your production number is lower.

Example: This is my car, an E220T CDI produced 05/12/2000
WDB2102061B290706

This is my dad's car, an E320T CDI produced around march/april 2001
WDB2102261B340142

And this is my dad's other car, a G270 CDI produced in 2002. as you see from the VIN, it is produced at X, which is Graz. It has a lower production number than our older W210s
WDB4633231X133323

But I have never seen this type of VIN on a Mercedes... Both old and completely new ones uses this format

WDB 210206 1B 123456

210 - model number
206 - Engine
1 - Left hand (2 right hand)
B - Sindelfingen production plant
123456 - production number

But I could check this more accurately for you if I had access to my parts database, which I don't at the moment.. sorry..

I bet it takes the two PIN rear pads. You can actually see how many pins there are without removing the rear wheels.

Your car has the exact same color combo as mine (1997 E320) but my delivery date is 4 months after yours. Mine uses 2 pin rear pads and yours is older so probably two PIN pads.

Couldn't happen. Rastatt only began production in '97 and has only made the A and B classes.

Thanks for the inputs.
Now I think the preceding letter is to be ignored when it comes to the chassis number.

But that is weird. Don't the J mean Rastatt? At least it's not Sindelfingen as other W210s..?

A-E Sindelfingen
F-H Bremen
J Rastatt

T Karmann
M Woking in England.

that is not entirely correct, as each production plant has their own serial number..
But in your case it works. WDB2100351A379346 was produced a whole year after yours. So with that info I would think you will need the two-pin pads

the part numbers for your front brakes are:
Pads - A0044200320 x1 (set of 4)
Disks - A2104212212 x2
Disk screws - A2014210171 x2
Sensors - A1265402017 x2

the part numbers for your rear brakes are:
Pads - A0044201620 x1 (set of 4)
Disks - A2104230612 x2
Disk screws - A2014210171 x2
Sensors - A1265402017 x2
