Stuck In First Gear
When the weather is cold my car would start in safe mode but I had good luck starting off in 4TH and when it warmed up in a few minutes it would be return to normal. I had an Indy change the plug shroud (don't know the correct name) on the right side of the Trans and it didn't really help. It was running fine when after an hour of driving it would not shift at all so I had it towed to the shop the next day, that rebuilt the trans 50,000 miles ago. Of course it now shifted perfectly and he thought it could be the shifting unit and the fault code indicated a bad speed sensor so he replaced the Electronic Control Module above the valve body at a cost of almost $600 an 2 days later it wouldn't shift when it was cold and I had to use 4TH instead of Drive and it was fine again after warming up. I have not gone back to him yet and I scanned the OBDII and showed no faults. I have discovered when it is cold if I turn my lights, on to see the shift lights, and the light is on in 4TH but not always on in Drive but If I hold the shift lever slightly to the left it will stay lit and no problem shifting. I am thinking that the shift assembly needs replacing as the Tech. first guessed. I will check with him and I am guessing that I could change this myself and save some money. Does this sound like the possible solution and how easy is it to change this assembly?

Easy
diy. That was your original problem.I can get the shift module, diy instructions on benzworld.org w210 diy section.
Your mechanic does not know what he is doing and it is costing you a lot of money as he throws parts at a problem that he should have properly diagnosed in the first place.

Never be
embarrassed to ask a question
Go to www.benzworld.org
look for the forum link
hit it and go down the page till you get to the W210 forum(not the W210 E55 forum)
all the top threads when you get to the W210 forum are called stickies, since they always stay at the top of the page.Look for the one that has transmission in the subject line.
Many of our members on MB have used it to solve the coffee in the shifter debacle.

If you need a module, shoot me a pm.
