Gear Selector

i have a 97 w210 with the full gear selector is there a way to put the newer shifter where you tap it from side to side? As always i appreciate the help and if anyone has changed a steering wheel in one of these cars post up i would love to see pics/

not without a heavy expensive rebuild. the gearboxes in pre facelift does not have the same electronics as the facelift gearboxes.

I was going to write tiptronic or sportstronic or whatever you want to call it since every manufacture has a different name for it but thanks i appreciate the kind reply carcrazy1

..

Well it wasn't a big deal anyway as i usually wouldn't use it. Just liked the appearance and function over my current piece.

'01 W210 E320 CDI

My car is a July '97 delivered, but model year '98 (smartkey, ASR and 4 airbags standard) and I've changed the steering wheel in mine. I got a leather steering wheel and chrome star airbag from a '99 W210. You can see it in my avatar...

About the shifter. All I know is that the pre-facelift shifter uses a bowdencable for positions P-N-D, while 4-3-2 are electronically 'transmitted'. So are the extra electronics to transmit the newer style "+" and "-" located on the newer style shifer or at the transmission itself?!
