Lightbulb W210 equivalent of a BMW e39 3.5i V8?

Hi,
I might be tempted to change my 1997 BMW e39 535i (V8) auto. What would be the MB equivalent in the w210?
The things I like about the car are the silky smooth engine, excellent transmission and brilliant suspension, the main downside: I get idiots trying to race me AND a lot of drivers don't like to let an e39 at junctions and so on.
What could you recommend and what should I be careful about when I go to look for one of those cars?
Thanks in advance for your help!
P.S. The search didn't return any good results!

300E a couple 1994 w124wagon E320 Wagon/,1971MGB Track/Rally, MG Midget Autocross ,2000 E320 wagon.
pick up

an 01 E55. It will lay waste to the 3.5 that we could not get in the 5 series over here in the V8.
Fit ,finish and power all put the 5 series to shame.
More money in the budget. An 06 C55, bullet proof platform and relatively trouble free.
Enjoy the hunt
the E320 with 221 hp will do 0-60 in 7.1 or so and that equals the euro E39 3.5l.
the E55 with 130 more hp and nearly 400 ft lbs torque will leave you wondering why you ever bought a BMW in the first place
Change the fluid in the 722.6 5speed auto with mb fluid and inspect as always.
properly tuned and suspended E55 fully capable of sub 12 second quarter mile.
If that is to your liking

Cool

+1 You can pick a 01-02 E55 AMG for cheap money. Do a search if you want more info on this, tons of hits. Solid Car. I'm keeping mine as a 2nd car...

I know some of the guys in the AMG section are debating to sell - fyi

Either way good luck and do your homework

Ohlord- no idea that you were all about the AMG go figure

Wagon

plus E55 engine. And you wonder if I was into AMG.
That's like wondering if I was into Chevy's. When I'm working on a 220 hp Chevy v6 MGB conversion.
If I don't like the engine it ain't going into my car.

Ohlord, do you have or are you seriously considering putting an E55 engine into your wagon? That would be an awesome car! I always wondered why they didn't have a W210 v8 wagon available in the US. Did they have one in Europe?

Jeez, now that you ve got the talent why stay old school? How about an air cooled chopper engine from one of the smaller birds? plenty of power and very efficient and compact. Now you have something different to brag on.

Fred
Fred it was available in Europe but was not deemed a profitable enterprise stateside so it was never certified for the US. Same holds true for any Brabus modified motor in the W/S210 wagon. None came stateside unless they were purchased in Europe and brought in as used personal vehicle. The E320 was stroked and bored to a 3.8L with 300HP, the E430 was hogged out to a 5+ and the E55 was converted to an E60V12 biturbo with 732hp+ on tap. Check out U tube for some of the banzai runs in that monster. And yes a wagon version was built and certified in Europe of the Bi-Turbo rocket V12. What a grocery getter.

Well, I've driven an e55 and I don't like the finish. The car feels cheap compared to the e39. It had done 85K miles and has had one owner and it did feel much older than my 1997 e39! The dashboard and the seats seem much worse.... The power is good and the gearbox is OK as well.
I'd much rather have an e39 M5 instead of an E55, the only downside of the BMW: no automatic. I'd need to look into an alpina B10 V8S (4.8 V8) for an auto version....
Is rust a common problem on the w210? I've looked at 2001-2003 and most of them seem to be rotten....never seen anything like that on the e39, even on cars that have always been kept outside

Just curious, if an W210 E55's fit and finish is inferior, then why would you be interested in lower class models?

I live near the ocean and I have yet to see a rusted W210.

I didn't expect the interior to feel much cheaper than a similar year BMW. It was a big disappointment. The reason I was considering the car is simple: too many idiots try to race me in the BMW.... the image is the biggest downside of the BMWs I'm afraid. I still need to see some more W210 to see if they all age so badly....maybe it was just that car?

Well, when it comes to rust, the Mercedes sold on the old continent between 1993-2003 seem to go rusty very quickly.... shame about it!

Why not just put on a set of "taxi" wheels and rebadge it as a 524d.

I would bet that the Bm'er will leave you stranded when it all goes to hell in a hand basket.. and probably not even turn on or something similarly deabilitating ... where as the 210 will always faithfully get you home.. and your car is not destroyed... this is a kind of redundancy that I like and hate but I know if I had to liive with out it I would be mad.. atleast in my experince.
hell 9 tmes out of 10 it even manages to run out of fuel on my door step when such crisis's occur

I was so shocked when i bumped into a owner of a 08 e320 and he told me that the car instantly limits to 20MPH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! if it detects a tyre puncture .. I feel sorry for the poor sole on the motorway that gets that
