dashboard buttons? key fob tricks?

What are the buttons on the left side of the main dash area for? There are three buttons: an up arrow, down arrow and "R".

Also, I was told that you could roll down and roll up windows remotely (presumably to air out the car on a hot day) using just the key FOB. How?

Thanks...

300E a couple 1994 w124wagon E320 Wagon/,1971MGB Track/Rally, MG Midget Autocross ,2000 E320 wagon.
Pre or post face lift?

AND the key fob you just hold the unlock button for a few seconds after it pops the locks and it opens the windows and sunroof. When you lock it you hold the lock button a few seconds after locks trip and it rolls em up.

For the key fob trick, point it at the black IR sensor on the door handle. The door locks are RF. The windows operate on IR.

If I recall, up and down buttons set display brightness when the headlights are on and the R resets the odometer. It's been a while, though.

Can you post a link or PM it to me please? I'm doing a search for "owner's manual" and not finding it.
Thanks...

I probably was blocking the IR with my hand, not realizing that the IR & RF were not completely redundant (which begs the question, why are they not?)

RF only operates lock/unlock
IR operates lock/unlock and the window open/close

So when you click lock, it sends both an IR and RF signal. When you hold it to close the windows, it only sends an IR signal.

There's undoubtedly an engineering/cost reason, but the idea is for security. If you accidentally hold the unlock button in your purse/pocket, the RF will unlock the doors. After a minute of not opening the doors, they'll automatically relock.

If it opened the windows by RF, it would also have opened the windows. And they would stay open, without you knowing. And it would be obvious they were open, versus the door lock which no one really knows.

I can answer your questions : The arrow up or down is to adjust the brightness UP (or darkness DOWN ) of your speedometer dial. The "R" is to reset your trip ometer (pres "R" & hold for a few second, the trip ometer will reset to zero.
With your car key in your hand, within a few feet (mine working only 10 feet or less), hold close button, all the windows & sunroof will close until you release the button. Same true with OPEN button (approach the car on a hot day, hold the open button, all the windown will roll down, then the sun roof will open (window open first, then sunroof) so the heat will get out before you start your car.
