Need some opinions...smog issues
hello. just got my 320 3 days ago. i took it in for a smog today & it didn't pass due to "fail function test." they said i may have had the chk engine light on but somehow got reset so it's not "ready." they also mentioned i needed to drive it around for several miles so all the sensors will kick back in. i know i will need to take care of the chk engine light but someone told me that if i time it right and the car is "ready" without the light being on yet i should be able to pass smog. then i can take care of the engine light at other time. is this accurate?

In California the seller is responsible for the car passing the smog test at the time of sale.
See:

There are exemptions if the car was a gift from an immediate family member. Read farther down the link for those details.

See above
plus why did you buy a car especially a Mercedes without having it inspected.
My guess is that whoever sold it to you erased the light and the problem remains and the light will come on again. The smog police will not even test it if the i/m system says not ready for a few systems.
go to www.benzworld.org w210 section or search generic drive cycle w210 ohlord and you can force the i/m system into ready mode if I am wrong and the i/m goes ready and all the obd2 codes are clear.www.Harborfreight.com has 50 buck scanners that will read obd2 and erase them however you still need to fix a problem if there is one or more since erased codes do not mean cleared issues.
You needed to find the forum before you paid the money..
pm me if you need me

i really needed a car and ran out of time. been saving my $ & looking since july. i was looking at 4 other 320s but when i was ready to make a decision the very next day, they were sold. i test drove this one and it runs strong. no engine noise/leak whatsoever so there were my answers. anyhow, i'm doing the drive cycle now. thank you for the assistance.
