Airbags? Does this seem right?

Yesterday I was driving down the highway at about 70 and I see the car in front of me swerve, and as I looked at why I had no time to react. I ran over a chock block from a tractor trailer. My front and rear passenger side airbags deployed as well as the window bag on the top. There is minimal damage to the car, fog light, probably need a new bumper and some repairs under the car. The car drives absolutely fine right now. No problems with handling or anything. Should this have happened and why??

It's a 2001 e55 with 103k. Also, this isn't totaled is it? I heard airbags can be pretty steep...

Airbags are triggered by the g-force signal in the accelerometers in the control unit mounted on the sheet metal on the console. An impact from below could cause a high spike signal, setting them off.
I think your window bags will be the most expensive, but I don't know a going rate, plus you need to replace the headliner where the part alone is $400+.
Do your sideabgs have a separate cover, or did they rip through the door panel covering? The bags themselves are a simple swap, but the panels can be expensive.

Unfortunately they ripped right through the door paneling cover, looks terrible. I understand the airbags going off for an accident but it wasn't all that bad, what if the steering wheel bag went off while I was driving 70 mph? Seems a bit scary to think that a small object van cause that

you hit an object that created a very fast rise-time impulse. i.e. a lot of G's in a short time window. since it was on one side that would look like a rollover event.
I'd have the suspension checked closely, especially the front shock mount support.

I looked up the cost for a steering wheel airbag once and I think it was around $800 for that alone.

Have a friend that

it happened to his wife. Same thing. Insurance paid Several grand less his deductible to repair. You can do the work yourself and get bags from a wrecked car and then have them coded to the car via an sds unit. Most shops are not certified to do airbags so that rules out most indie shops due to liability issues.
Dealer and insurance maybe your only option. Unless you got the name of the truck.

Thanks guys, looks like I'm going through insurance for this one. Good autobody shop with a nice auto repair shop in house. Funny thing, when I stopped in to show him the car there was a 2001 E55 that was just finished. Just did the airbags on it from an accident.

I'll be getting this all set as well as some cosmetic blemishes and when it's all back to normal I'll put it up for sale. Anyone interested let me know...nice car for a good price.

Hi Cneedham. I am in Boston and would be interested in your car depending on the price point offcoursre. I have a 98 e320 will 110 k running smooth. I hope your car gets fixed soon. I have also sent you a msg regarding the tail lights you were selling some time back. Do let me know if you still have them and any other w210 aftermarket parts.. thanks

The same thing happened to my nephew in a volve. He hit some road debris on the highway and all of his airbags deployed.

11k worth of damage, Unbelievable. Insurance will cover but what a hassle over road debris
