no, need higher HT/HS to meet MB oil spec. Also make sure that it meets ACEA A3/B3/B4. I don't believe M1 0w30 AFE meets either of these.
I personally feel there are several synthetic oils that would work well on these cars other than the 229.5-approved oils, but there are certain parameters for an oil to even qualify for approval. One of these parameters is an HT/HS of >3.5.
The most readily available 229.5-specced oils are Mobil 1 0w40 and German Castrol (aka Castrol Syntec 0w30 "european formula"). A couple other oils that I would not hesitate to use, though they aren't necessarily MB approved, would be M1 5w40 "turbodiesel" and M1 10w30 "high mileage".

German Castrol here*. I would be hesitant to run a *fuel mileage* oil in my engine. It may not provide the level of hydrodynamic lubrication needed. My engine longevity is worth more than gaining a very small amount of MPG.
