Mobil 1 Advanced Fuel Economy 0W 30
I personally feel there are several synthetic oils that would work well on these cars other than the 229.5-approved oils, but there are certain parameters for an oil to even qualify for approval. One of these parameters is an HT/HS of >3.5.
The most readily available 229.5-specced oils are Mobil 1 0w40 and German Castrol (aka Castrol Syntec 0w30 "european formula"). A couple other oils that I would not hesitate to use, though they aren't necessarily MB approved, would be M1 5w40 "turbodiesel" and M1 10w30 "high mileage".
