High compression
engine requires premium fuel. You will gain in mpg what you pay the extra 20cents for and the engine will run the way intended.Should tell you in the gas door, anyway.

Knock sensors will probably prevent holes in the top of your pistons. But, Mercedes is pretty specific in requiring (not recommending) 91 Octane gasoline. If you run regular....you will probably see a bit higher fuel consumption, a bit lower performance, and I'm guessing a bit shorter life span of your cats.
In my opinion running on regular is stepping over dollars to pick up dimes.

Go for the 91, and if possible 93. I have a 99' E430 with over 200k miles, and I have always put 93 in it. I noticed the 1 time that I didn't due to Hurricaine Katrina, I only got about 290 miles off of the tank instead of the usual 330-360 miles.

Owners manual state the engine REQUIRES (not recomends) premium 91 octane minimum. Then has several paragraphs stating precautions to take if 91 octane is not available. Does that give you a clue?

Guys as my dad always says there is a reason why 93 octane is more expensive. My old 2000 e430 has always ran on 93 from day one. i just change the spark plugs/wires. I swear to you the spark plugs look like
hardly use and the cars has 110k on them. i replace them with Bosh Iridium and of course i will continue to use 93 octane.

I use 98 octane.. 95octane only when 98 isn't available at my preferred gas station..
What stone age are you living in over there?
we don't have anything lower than 95 octane in Norway
Some gas stations also have 99 octane

Here's an excerpt from Wiki:
"...The higher rating seen in Europe is an artifact of a different underlying measuring procedure. In most countries (including all of Europe and Australia) the "headline" octane that would be shown on the pump is the RON, but in Canada, the United States and some other countries the headline number is the average of the RON and the MON, sometimes called the Anti-Knock Index (AKI), Road Octane Number (RdON), Pump Octane Number (PON), or (R+M)/2. Because of the 8 to 10 point difference noted above, this means that the octane in the United States will be about 4 to 5 points lower than the same fuel elsewhere: 87 octane fuel, the "regular" gasoline in Canada and the US, would be 91-92 in Europe. However most European pumps deliver 95 (RON) as "regular", equivalent to 90–91 US AKI=(R+M)/2, and deliver 98, 99 or 100 (RON) (93-94 AKI) labeled as Super Unleaded - thus regular petrol sold in much of Europe corresponds to premium sold in the United States."

Aah.. So that means that the Danish stone age 92 octane fuel should not be used then..
It also means I should only use 95 octane when there is no other alternative...
Good to know
But I usually only use 98 octane anyways, so I guess i'm safe

I always wondered why when went to Malaysia that it seemed as though their gas was "superior", albeit them having 99 octane! Everyone has about the same quality, more or less.

Costco has Tier 1 fuel and sells as cheaply as regular unleaded here. Granted, there's a membership fee ($60) but watch for promos waving that and you'll save $60 on fuel alone if you use the car much. Savings inside are hit-n-miss but can be real, esp. if you need huge quantities or like Apple Pie.
