12V DC plug in won't charge phone/ipod
Whats the deal here? I have an FM transmitter I'd like to try for my iPod and when I plug it in it doesn't work. Also the other night my phone died and I plugged it in to charge in the outlet and it wouldn't charge. The same equipment charged in my friend's E-Class.

Glad you found the problem.
FYI, there is another issue as well. The 'cigar' lighter socket on MB is slightly larger than those on US cars. Some adapters may not make good contact unless aligned well and the springs on the side stick out far enough. Not a problem if you have some sort of LED on your accessories which indicates power. Just move the insert around until the light comes on.

Thanks for the info Richard. I have noticed that my cell phone charger will not work in the MB cigar lighter whereas it will in my other 2 cars. I thought I tried rotating it to establish proper contact but I might not have hit the sweet spot. I can tell by the LED so I'll give it another shot.

I was just out cruising around testing out the transmitter and ipod, works great. When I was checking the fuses I moved the one from the rear defroster to the cigar lighter slot and thought nothing of it. I get in my car and I start driving and realize my turn signals and windshield wipers don't work either. I put it back in the old spot and bought more fuses and all is good right now.

BTW, unless they've been cannibalized there should be spare fuses in the front fuse panel (under the hood). Compare the fuse card with the actual fuses and you may see that in the 'rear' section of the panel nearest to the windshield there are fuses with no number. If they're gone you can store some there.
I keep one of each size there which means I'll probably never blow a fuse.
