1999 W210 advice on buying one

I finally parted with my 1985 300TD at 320k miles and am interested in a 1999-2000 E320, having driven a friend's. What is your take on this model?

List of Common but not frequent issues here:

W210's are safe and have plenty of power unless you're racing on Sat night. They get great gas mileage especially on the highway (E320 gets close to 30 mpg). The drive train is very robust (same one used in V8) but most owners get a few electrical gremlins. Potential repairs at 100K are O2 sensors, MAF sensor, Plugs, motor mounts and transmission/differential service. Nothing real expensive but it's a good bargaining tool if the work is needed. You can save a lot if you can/want to do some of the routine maintenance yourself such as cabin filters, air filters and oil changes.

As pointed out, inspect thoroughly. If you don't feel qualified, use an good independent MB technician. A good inspection may cost $200 or so and should include a written report of everything that was inspected with comments. If you pay $50 for a guy to drive it around the block, you're not getting much more than you can do yourself. Obviously, save the inspection for the one(s) you are ready to pull the trigger on.

Buy the newest and lowest mileage w210 you can afford. Thw wagons were produced in W210 (actually designated as S210) through 2003 while the sedan stopped with the 2002 model year. great cars with plenty of room and easy to work on. tranny fluid change is highly suggested before 100K with filter. you can DIY that or pay the dealer around $300.00 for it. The post facelift suposedly had 1600 changes from the earlier W210s of 96-99. Best wishes and check autotrader.com for comps.
