W210's are safe and have plenty of power unless you're racing on Sat night. They get great gas mileage especially on the highway (E320 gets close to 30 mpg). The drive train is very robust (same one used in V8) but most owners get a few electrical gremlins. Potential repairs at 100K are O2 sensors, MAF sensor, Plugs, motor mounts and transmission/differential service. Nothing real expensive but it's a good bargaining tool if the work is needed. You can save a lot if you can/want to do some of the routine maintenance yourself such as cabin filters, air filters and oil changes.
As pointed out, inspect thoroughly. If you don't feel qualified, use an good independent MB technician. A good inspection may cost $200 or so and should include a written report of everything that was inspected with comments. If you pay $50 for a guy to drive it around the block, you're not getting much more than you can do yourself. Obviously, save the inspection for the one(s) you are ready to pull the trigger on.
