Question Mobile 1 Oil Change

Gang,

I have a 96 E320 with 124,000 miles and I have been using Mobile 1 oil every 5,000 miles. Is it possible to use Mobile 1 to 7500 miles or longer? I think the manual calls for 7,500 oil change interval using standard oil. The reason that I ask is that I have seen on Mobile 1 oil website that they recommend changing per owners manual recommendation. Some manufactueres such as Porsche recommend oil changes at 15,000 miles and some at 5,000 miles. Seems to be a wide range. I know that the driving conditions will influence it to some degree. I drive mostly highway miles and I am pretty easy on the gas pedal.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

I also use Mobil 1 as my benz has high miles and I too have heard a lot about how often you should change your oil. Since you already know that it depends on your driving, take a look at your oil and see if it's dirty or has any deposits in it after 5000 miles. I drive a little hard so I change mine every 5000 miles religiously as my Mercedes mechanic recomments. I already had a lifter problem which set me back over a grand at a discount so I am really on top of the maintenance on my car. Good luck...

What weight of MObil 1 are you guys using. I want to do my own change and not sure what type of Mobil 1 to choose.
Also how many quarts are going into the crankcase?

I use Mobil 1 With SuperSyn™ Formula 10W-30
Higher-Mileage Vehicle Formula. My crankcase takes 9 qts. but I have a V8. I don't know exactly how many your 6 will take but you can probably find out at the following site: http://www.mobil1.com/index.jsp or just call Mercedes and ask the service dept.

I use Mobil 0 W 40 in my 1998 E320 with 60k miles; car takes 6.5 courts. I change the oil around every 4k miles or so. Used the same stuff in my 2000 E430.

I have a 1998 V8, e430 with 43000 miles.
I am not sure what type of oil is in there but it was changed at the dealer before I purchased the car,

thanks for that link. I looked it over and I thought that 15W40 would give that little extra protection I would like. I remember the world of difference a heavy conventional oil like 20W50 made on my 71 280sel 4.5 It run so much better in summer with less overheating. It was also great in winter. Thinner oil made it run hot in traffic and as soon as I changed to thicker blend it was so much better. THis example may not be great since the 280Sel is 30 years old but I think I will go for 15W40. Maybe overkill but like that extra protection. Can anyone suggest otherwise?

Manual states to change every 10K-15K miles, so I follow to the manual. I do not think that more frequent changing will harm your engine, so if you like the process, then you can change it every 3K miles or more frequently.

Dema, please don't follow the manual and change you oil every 10-15000 miles. So much sludge will build up in your engine that you will be on the road to valve and lifter damage, especially after 100,000 miles. Your car will also run a lot hotter. Ask me! The previous owner on my other benz changed the oil every 10,000 miles or so (as per the service records) and I ended up having to do a valve job and replacing all of the lifters at 105,000 miles. You don't even want to know what that set me back. To the extreme, every 7500 miles would be okay on light driving, if you like to "punch it" or drive hard every once in a while, 5-7000 miles would be the best solution on fully synthetic oil. I have had a lot of cars and a few with over 100,000 miles on them so if you want your car to last, you must take care of it! Good luck...

Changing your oil & oil filter every 5000mi or even more frequently is only beneficial to your car and not harmful. Just so I'm not plagiarizing, according to one of my tech friends, oil is the blood of the vehicle. That should put things in perspective.

On one of my previous cars, I changed the oil myself every 2700-3000mi with synthetic oil. The car lasted for practically an eternity with zero engine problems.

How frequently you change your oil will be more dependent upon what your wallet can afford.

darkLCD, I love the line, "oil is the blood of the vehicle." I told my mechanic this line and he said he couldn't have put it better himself.

So gang, change your oil frequently, and may your car live forever!

For the record, the V8 takes 8.5 quarts, not 9. Watch for foaming if you put the entire 9 in.

MB service uses synthetic on all E's from '98 onward (or at least mine does). Just so you know if you take a '97 in for service, make sure you ask for synthetic specifically.

Thanks for the info. My Mercedes mechanic changes my oil and I am the one who supplies the Mobil 1 for him so I know what's going in there. Now that I think of it, I think he only uses 8.5 qts. and not 9. I wasn't sure but now I remember. Thanks again...

Let's beat the topic a little more.
For the total DYI what do you use to take the oil out. Siphoon out with one of those vacum things? WHere can I get one?
Where is the drain plug? (I know that it's probably on the bottom
Do I need any special tool (socket 17mm?)
What is the filter part # and any tool needed to change it?

thanks

To drain the oil, remove the drain plug from the bottom of the engine (you don't need a siphon) when the engine is cool. The plug is very easy to find on the oil pan, you can't miss it! Let all of the oil drain out into an oil bucket, I would let it drain for a while until it completely stops. In the meantime, remove the air filter housing and you will find the oil filter. Change the oil filter/canister. Then replace the plug and fill the engine with oil. Make sure to let the engine run for a few minutes after you're done until it heats up and then shut it off and check the oil again to make sure you have enough oil in there. Unfortunately I can't tell you what size socket to use, not hard to figure out. Depending on your year and model, the oil filters are different. You may contact the dealer for part numbers or any auto parts store. Have fun...

The drain plug is on the passenger side. You'll need to remove the plastic covering to get to it, the size is a standard 1/2 on my car.

The V8 is 8.3quarts, not sure on the V6. But I change my own oil, and oil filter. Matter afact, I just changed it yesterday. Funny how this post appeared today

I use Mobil 1 0-40W. they also have a Mobil 1 0-30W, but thats up to you, and how often you punch around the car.

Umm..I don't know about Jimmy, but on my 98 V8 the oil filter is on driver side, front end of the engine, near the radiator on TOP of the motor. So you don't have to take apart your air filter, even though you should change your air element at the same time....

Thanks for the update Turbo][, they really changed the engine around from the 420 to the 430. I think yours sounds a lot easier than mine because of the airhousing and because the filter is closer to the front near the top and unobstructed. My oil filter is near the bottom near the oil pan but it's far too difficult to access it from the bottom so you have to go through the top. I am also at around 8.5 qts of oil, not to different. BTW, do you know about the meet in Northridge, CA at the end of May. Check out my thread referencing it and I hope you can make it!

thanks for the update. I think I will give the syphoon vacum thing a try. I always get all messed up when I drain the oil and it looks like a clean way of doing it.

By the way, if I change the oil myself, I want to reset the FSS. How do you do that on a '98 E?

To reset the FSS on the 98+ here is the procedure

- Move start switch into position "2".
- Within the first 4 s after moving start switch into position "2": press odometer (O) twice within one second . The display for the service request is thus activated for 10 s .
- Within these 10 s move start switch into position "0". The service request continues to be displayed.
- Press reset button for odometer (O) and hold pressed.
- Move start switch into position "2".
- Continue to hold odometer (O) pressed (about 1O s ) until the signal sounds and the new start distance appears in the display.

NOTE: Make sure all door is close, and no other message are on FSS...EX: Light bulb failure, brakes...etc..etc...

A good siphon pump can be found at www.griotsgarage.com where they have both a manual pump and a pneumatic model for use with a compressor.
