Sticky steering wheel controls?

The steering wheel controls on my 2001 E320 4Matic wagon have been getting gummy as the rubber coating gets old, and now they are starting to peel off.

Is there an easy way to get the steering wheel apart so I can lean all the coating off?

Unfortunately, it looks like the 'repair' part is the entire steering wheel, including the airbag, which is a pretty steep price for four dual buttons...

Anyone know how all those things go together?

Many Thanks!

Members have had good results by just removing the rest of the coating to expose the plastic underneath. The sticky coating is there to give a "softer" feel on buttons

I had the same problem when I bought my Mercedes..... I just used some clean sprayer cant remember what it was, and cleaned all of it, looks so much better... but it was pain in the @$$ to get that coating off, I had to use my nail most of the time

I have the same problem. When you removed the sticky stuff, did lettering on the buttons come off too, or was it not affected?

You could probably find a solvent that would take it off, but isopropyl wipes didn't touch it, and helped with removing the sticky stuff (though I've still got some fingernail work to finish up...)

Beware of the paint on the steering wheel (airbag cover) around it though, that comes off with Windex and such...

I removed the sticky stuff with denatured alcohol and the icons were not affected.

I'm seeing 210-821-2551 (-something) on Google, is that the same thing? I'm imagining (-something) is a color code...

Anyone know how hard these are to replace?

I looked at one of the links and saw the price of $296 and decided that cleaning the goo off was the way to go.

Steering Wheel Paint

So now that we're de-stickfying our steering wheels (yup, I think I made up that word), where can I obtain the steering wheel paint? I have a Java interior, and I think the matching steering wheel paint is called Borneo, but the dealer doesn't carry it.

The Goo Gone didn't strip the paint off the airbag cover? Mine is gone in places from some random combination of glass cleaner, isopropyl, and other such things.

No sir. Its looks great. Now there are some dark spots on it from the previous owner but nothing new from me. They actually drive me crazy and I was thinking about buying a whole new wheel.
