Cat is going bad. Need to replace with new. Through dealer is very pricy at more than 900 per side. best to go aftermarket for considerably less. Cats in North America are under a eight year/ 80000 mile warranty from MB for free replacement if bad.

California is the only state with catalytic converter requirements. You must buy a california approved CC. Somehow, they will know when you go to smog it. There a few CA approved aftermarket CCs on the internet.

A muffler shop can remove it and weld one back in.

If it's the rear cat that's rattling, the Magnaflow 53005 can be welded in to replace the oe unit. They are only about $65 including shipping on ebay. A competent muffler shop can weld it in for $70 or less. That won't meet California CARB rules but the only way the aftermarket cat can be detected during a smog inspection is visually and they usually never look under the car.

Fred; That's good to know. Do you know if the pipe inlet and outlet IDs are the same as OEM? Would you happen to know if the flow rate is equal to OEM as well?

The ID's are, if not exactly the same, close enough so that it welds in with no problem. I don't know the flow rate but it has been fine on my E430 so I'm sure you'll have no problems with the V6. Search this and Benzworld forums for Magnaflow 53005 and you'll find that many others have gone this route.

i replaced mine not too long ago the dealer in SF said most of the ones they sell are re-manufactured ones i just looked at the reicipts and they charged me 275 and a 150 core charge. idk do others dealers have the same? and gave me a 1 year warranty.

Forgot to mention this was for the one passenger side and included both Catalytic converters

2002 E320
2002 E320 (54k miles) Catalytic Converter- Not 4matic, not wagon

I am having a real problem locating a universal catalytic converter that will fit my 2002 E320 (Rears Left and Right). They have the normal problematic noise as described in this post. They are offset and none of the universal models quoted in this and other posts look like they will work. My indy muffler place is saying that they must be offset to fit. They are going to charge me $275 each, plus ~$400 for the splice in work. Seems pricey as I could have, for almost the same price, bought aftermarket parts (entire pipe and two converters each) and installed myself (only a bolt up for the whole thing) -- of course assuming that I can do it myself (maybe), and that my time is free (not usually). Painful.

On another note, how do you find part numbers for anything and everything Mercedes? It makes it so much easier to find parts when you know the part number, but it seems like every site purposely hides the OEM part numbers.

Thanks! I love my car when it is running nicely, and hate it when it is not.

Wrong forum.
For starters....
c320....probably a w203 or newer. Don't know.
Fill in your user cp info.

Use one of the online EPCs, as Plutoe suggested, on this necropost.
Put in your vin# and then do some research.

Will need to know the year of the C320 to determine correct forum section. You can also find it by going back to the main forum page and scrolling down the main forum page until you find the correct section of the forum for your specific vehicle. Be sure to match the year of your vehicle and the model designation to the correct forum section.
