E320 2000 - integrated cell phone
I am the original owner of a 2000 E320. It was built to my specifications in Germany. The car has navigation, and it was supposed to have an integrated cell phone, but the dealer told me that the technology for the cell phones in this model was not reliable, and she told me not to trust it but to have their tech person install a holder and microphone in the car. I did that at the time, but my current cell provider does not carry phones that can be mounted in holsters on dashboards. I wonder now whether I CAN have my cell phone function in my car? It has controls on the steering wheel for phone usage, so it was created so that I could use a cell phone with it. Do you know what I would need to do to make my cell phone work in my car? Thanks for your advice on this.

All W210s were built in Germany and you don't mention where you reside now. The cell technology in your car is 11 years old, which is years before digital phones and bluetooth. Forget about ever getting that to work in today's technology. My suggestion would be to shop for a good bluetooth headset to use with your current cell phone but if you want to read more on this topic, try this link:

As another alternative, you could upgrade your car-stereo to one that includes Bluetooth. You can then operate your handheld unit through the car radio. There are viable options out there from about $200 and up depending on other features.

The Motorola Timeport phone that you would have received for the holster does not have GPS, so even though you can still find them on eBay, service providers won't activate them. There are, however, a number of upgrade kits that allow you to connect new phones to the input in the armrest compartment. Just search the forum or the web.

actually the technology is a bit older. model year 2000 was launched in 99. all changes were planned at least 18 months before that, so it's more like 97. call it 14 years old.

Your phone's technology is analog. FCC canceled analog service in 2008 but it was dead before then as service providers jumped on the bandwagon early. You will have to replace it with one of the options mentioned in the link.

The good news is that you can upgrade the cell phone equipment in your '00 w210 so that it will work with a modern phone. This is all described in the link posted above. Simply, you will have to replace the PSE module and the Startac cradle and, I think, the antenna switch. The Startac cradle can be replaced by a V60 cradle if you want to use the V60s phone, which is pretty primitive but is GPS complaint and can be activated by Verizon. You can get the bluetooth "puck" which plugs into either a V60 cradle or a cradle adapter cable. The bluetooth puck will enable you to use most modern phones, including the iPhone with full functionality - phone calls play through the audio system and automatically mute the radio/CD, contacts list displays on the dash, steering wheel controls, etc. And, since your car originally came with a phone, you won't have to have the fiber optic ring "version coded" at the dealer. All the parts will be plug and play.
Read the link carefully and you will find all you need. The integrated phone is an awesome convenience - so much better than fussing with a bluetooth headset. You might also want to consider retrofitting voice control, if your car doesn't already have it. It's not that difficult and then you can dial a call by just speaking the phone number out loud.

As a sponsor, I should also not there is a simple, one box, simple plug in Argos that converts the car to modern bluetooth. Not a bunch of things that need to be plugged in. Just one box, plug it into the existing cable in the trunk. Start car, Pair phone, DONE.

I have a 2001 E320 wagon.. Where would the cable you're referring to be in my car?

I have a 2001 E320. I'm the original owner. The vehicle came with the Motorola timeport phone. I went through the changes from analog to digital. I purchased a PSE from ebay and installed it in the trunk under the panel. The old cradle was also replaced with the new one. I then purchased a bluetooth puck that was plugged into the cradle.
Since then, my phone has changed several times. Now I'm using Samsung Charge Droid with my MB2001 E320. Old technology, old voice recognition system. Still works.

I am still using the timeport in my 01 wagon (it was activated years ago and Verizon still supports).
When I bought an 02 sedan, I tried to get Verizon to activate the timeport in it, but it couldn't be done (the verizon system would not allow activation of the analog phone). So for that car, I bought the MB bluetooth adapter and it works with most phones.
Both cars still have full integration with the MB audio system.

I think the TimePort is actually digital but does not support E911, thus Verizon not activating it. Analog signal was actually shutdown a few years ago and you would not have any "bars" on the phone if you forced it to analog, or if it were an analog-only phone.
