E55 or E430
Hello,
We want a 2002 E class and we are looking at the E430 Matic and the E55.The E55 we found has 88,000 miles and has been in a minor crash and didn't have any frame damage and the private seller wants 11K. We would have to fly to Utah to get the E55. The E430 4matic is in state (Washington) and has 60,000 miles for 13K. The E430 is also at a dealer. How much more is insurance on The E55 compared to the E430 and also what about repairs is the E55 a lot more? We would be keeping the car for a long time so would the E55 be better for that?
thanks

How many miles do you drive a year? At 15k, your gas costs will be $700 more than an e320 ($1100 more at $6/gal, which is coming). Don't sweat the insurance.
I think your maintenance costs will be similar, though certain repairs will be higher on the one vs the other (e.g. alternator removal on the 4wd).
It's more a question of passion (E55) vs practicality (E430). I would want to have the body work inspected first on the E55, though.

13k For
an 02 is about $4 grand to much.
Utah car subject to rust.
Insurance the same for both.
If you are worried about repairs cost and are unable or unwilling to do your own maint and repairs neither car is your cup o tea.
If money is no object get the E55 but shop the Ca market. Greater selection of low mile examples.

You're taking a huge risk putting big V8s in the hands of a 17 year old. I'd recommend a Volvo 4 cyl wagon: safe, unsexy, slow. Plus if it's old enough you'll teach him how to wrench.
