new battery car still difficult to start 2001 E430

Hello everyone. My car (2001 E 430) has been having some difficulty starting lately. I insert the key and it takes several seconds before I hear the click (unlocking mechanism) and am able to turn the key. Sometimes it clicks and I am unable to turn the key. (similar to what you experience when your steering wheel is locked) I replaced the battery today thinking the plus 100 degree temps here in Texas had zapped it. Now I do not know what to do? Could it be the starter or something?

all ideas are appreciated.

Polish the lens on the key

if it is gummed up or clouded could be the issue.
Does it happen with your spare key?

If your voltage is good ( just by replacing the batt dosent mean voltage is ok) you might have corrosion at one of the batt wire connections.. which is causeing a voltage drop.

If thats not it you got 3 choises key, eis, esl ive have polished the ir lens before like o lord suggested and it has helped but if not it could be one of those

The key might be bad(try a spare key if you have it) the key might be not sending data
the eis might not be reciving/ transmiting data or the esl isnt reciving data
