Limp home mode?

Hi guys.

It was a horrible rainy night my car was driving fine until i decided to go home. Once i literally get on the highway i notice when i press the gas pedal the engine does not pick up whatsoever. I sorta panic its night out raining hard and i am not in the mood to wait for a tow truck and i am 30 miles from home... I get on highway and the car is only going 30-40 mph. i kept playing with the gas pedal to see if it would do anything but it had no effect. The car was almost driving itself until would press brake.

During the first half 15 miles or so ill say when i was driving i would press the gas all the way down and the cars rpm wouldn't move up at all. it would say around 1-2k. I pulled over two times to restart the car and try to drive the car it wouldn't change anything or make anything normal. One thing i noticed is that when i would have the car in neutral or in park i believe the car would rev up to about 3k rpm and if i were to press the brake pedal it would come down.

After about halfway mark on my way home the car sorta came to life and gave me more power. I was able to do about 60 but still i had to press the gas pedal to the halfway mark even from a complete stop to get the car up to speed.

I have a check engine light on I will try to read it by Monday.

I am glad i made it home , but i am nervous as to what is wrong.

Any ideas of what it could be or what to expect.
Thank you.

Hi nsupra,

Until you are able to get your readings from the ODBII reader my guess would be your MAF is possibly dirty or going bad or fuel related(ie fuel filter). The way you describe the symptoms of your car, If it was truly transmission related you would be able to get high revs but no shifting out of first gear (ie limp mode).

Once you are able to get the error codes, you'll have a better idea which way to trouble shoot.

Doesn't sound too bad....

Is this a easy diy? Is there one available.

Well i have an interesting update..

I just remembered about three years ago i installed a piece of crap sprint booster.
So it clicked to me today that the sprint booster could of possibly failed. I unplugged the stupid thing and put it back to stock connected form and right away the engine idled and gas pedal and all worked properly. I got the check engine light cleared and the light hasn't come back. I am not sure what messed with it or why it broke could of been the water getting in from hard rains and puddles... i dunno... it was definitely plugged firmly. I didn't even bother trying to plug it in and out either the sprint booster just to see if it works. I am going to do without it.

Well lesson learned.... don't both with aftermarket add on crap they either make the car worse or break one way or another.
