Anyone gotten a brake job done?
I did all 4 wheels (rotors, pads, and sensors) last week, and I was in shock about the bill...$800, and most of that was parts. An this was an independant garage.
Anyone know if this was out of line?

I did the brakes on mine about 3 month ago by myself. And replaced the front rotors, pads, and sensors. The rotors cost the most but the pads and sensors were not that expensive. They must have charged you about $500 in labor.

Rear brakes
The whole job only takes a couple of hours. The back brakes go so much quicker than the fronts. Are you sure you needed rotors? They have them at Performance Products and on their web page.

plus pads $99.00 (EBC low dust, they do work), and did it myself, mainly because I like doing it.
I had found a shop that would do the front rotors change for $625.00 plus the pads (because they'd only but OEM pads which I didn't want), but I opted for having some fun and do it myself.

Thanks for the comments. I did price the parts on the web and found much lower prices. They charged me about $490 for 4 rotors, pads, sensors, and a few tiny items. The labor was 2.5 hours at $70/hr.
I'd do it myself, but I'm afraid I might screw it up because I don't know anything about these sensors (which, by the way, are causing ABS/ESP warnings again on the dash display).
The shop owner, who I've done a fair amount of business with, told me the rotors are designed to go along with the pads. He said he couldn't cut them like he does with domestic makes.
I've heard various lines like this through the years and I'm not sure what I believe. Another guy once told me that the rotors are designed to last through 2-3 sets of pads.
The truth is out there somewhere.

Seattle prices
Here in Seattle I was quoted 515.00 for the Front and 525.00 For the rear, that includes all parts and labor.
That was from a independant called "Fat City" German Autowerks
The Dealer price was more horrendous.

Speaking to the rotors
This shop also told me that the rotors should always be replaced because of the type of braking system, which relies on excessive friction. And then he added something about harder pads, and softer rotors... or vice versa... he lost my interest after the long explanation....

Interestingly, the front pads on my mom's E430 went way before her rear pads -- a friend and I did the front pads (we left the original rotor on, didn't even have it turned) in about 1.5 hours. We would have been even quicker, but re-inserting the sensor was giving us all sorts of problems.
These days, if the sensor wire doesn't give me any problems, I can change the front pads in about 45 minutes.

2000 E320 with 45600 miles in for B service:
Front brake pads: labor $67.55, parts $82.90, Hazmat charge $9.95. Total with tax $165.05. Not bad for service at an MB dealer!
Original pads were worn 90% and there was no rotor wear. I have spent more for domestic cars in this locale.
