For those that posted about being able to open the windows with the remote, what years are your vehicles?
I believe that you have to close the windows with the remote first before you can use it to open them if you are only using the IR sensor.

My E320 is a 96 so all of the information in my posts have been tested on it.

So far I confirmed:

You can lock the car and close all windows and sunroof with the IR remote or the key in the doors or trunk locks.

You can unlock the car and open all of the windows with the key in the doors or trunk lock if it was already locked.

Question

Regarding the opening of windows... I posted a thread several months ago and never really got resolution to it on how to open the windows. I have 97 E420 and have never been able to regularly open the windows. Once in a blue moon the windows come down when I hold down the remote to unlock, but I can never repeat it.

I haven't had time to get to the dealer so if anyone has the magic combination, please share.

it's kinda weird, after doin' it 10 times, i noticed you have to press the button while standing in front of the driver door, so that when you press once, the car opens, then keep the button pressed and aim the remote carefully at the rear view mirror in the inside and the windows will open after 2 or 3 seconds of waiting with the button pressed.
maybe you could only open them once in that blue moon because since these old infrared remotes have a very short range and sometimes in my car even when i press the button and im standing bahind the car, it wont open,
so if u notice that the windows wont open just keep the button pressed and wiggle the remote a little, they will open then.
im starting to wonder all this keeping the button pressed will drain the remote's battery much faster :p

If you know that you are going to open the windows, use the key instead of the remote. Like it was said, you will drain your batteries much faster holding the button down.

Why not just jump in the car, start it up and use the 4 window buttons...

When it is hot out, like most of the time here in Arizona, it is nice to crack open the windows to let the heat out. Opening all 4 windows while unlocking the car is nice and it looks cool too. Make sure someone is watching when you do it for the greatest effect.

"Buttons" not "button." There are 4 of them, one for each window. BTW, it was a joke...

Leave a window part way open or the roof popped open. Get out of the car and close the door. Put the key in the door lock and turn it to lock the doors and hold it there. The door should lock and a couple of seconds later, the window and roof should close.

Once you know that works, do the unlock test. You know the doors are now locked. So turn the key to the unlock position and hold it there until all of the windows start to roll down. Stop at any by turning the key back to the center position.

Had tried what you had suggested (thanx E-klasse btw) but nothing moved - except for the driver's lock only . BTW, isn't the key only meant to operate the lock in which you place the key? I always assumed the key was just a backup in case the battery goes dead on the smart key.

The key should also work in the trunk lock to work all of the door locks. Yours must be different because you said it only moved the drivers door lock. It should activate the central locking just like your remote does.

Same here! Unless I'm a complete idiot (no comments please), holding my key in the unlock position in my trunk does not roll down my windows either. They will roll up all day long with either the remote or the key in the lock but not down.

Ah well, I guess my (car's! ) keyhole's either not connected to the central lock system or its just f_cked. Either way, the small key attached to the smart remote's too painful to keep in place - at least I have comfort knowing that I can still get into the car when my remote batteries goes dead. :o

In any case, has anyone had the same experience, and can this be fixed (e.g. wiring/re-wiring) - the doors, not the trunk?

Same here. I got all excited and ran out after work to try the Merclover remedy. Got the locks to go up and down twenty times, but not a single window moved.

The only way the windows go down is if you hold the open position in the passenger side door lock as described in the manual. My E420 has no lock on the driver's side to do this.

MB has the up window thing covered; the down is not too good.

Your E420 must be a 97 with the red and green LEDs in the drivers door. Did you try this with the remote button. Hold button on remote down while aiming at the receiver.

Yep, 97 with the good old red and green. I've tried the door with the remote and it works maybe once every 50 times. The owners manual explains how to roll them up (and that works) but does not mention rolling them down. That's why I was questioning if it was really possible.

Ok, 5 seconds after I wrote the last posting I went to the garage and closed the roof with the remote (fine). I then rolled down the windows and then up again (great).

However, that was it. No more fun with the remote because it dosn't work now (not great). I have new batteries in and I am stumped. I walked around to the back of the car and it worked once! ahhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!!!

It has to be the sequence in which I am performing this. I've tried a number of clicks on the remote etc... with no luck. I consider myself pretty logical when it comes to this type of stuff but this one has me feeling a little silly.

Here's my working theory if you have the 97 with the red and green indicators on the door handle; there is some type of sequence of three clicks that 1. unlocks 2. begins to re-lock & 3. (timing is tough) holding the third click down unlocks and opens windows.

This work 3 or 4 times in a row and then stopped working. I am going to try it this afternoon on the way to lunch..we'll see.

I GOT IT!!!! this SHOULD WORK!!
okay, (i guess this only works for 95 to 97 models with the remote and the red and green LEDs)
get ur key and go to the drivers door and open the car, then close it but keep the button pressed for AT LEAST 3 seconds. then press and hold the button again to open the car AIMING it to the rear view mirror which is inside the car to open the windows. this should work. i noticed that the windows will only open when the lcd panel below the speedo lights up.
so when u come for the first time in the morning to open ur car, this lcd panel wont light up until u open the door. so the way out is the one i mentioned above b'cos when u are closing the car and keeping the button pressed, the car recognizes that and wants to close the windows so when u open the car again it will be able to recognize that u want to open the windows. try it

You were pretty close merclover but not exact on my crazy car. It actually doesn't work every time for me but at least I got it to work a couple of times.

I did as you said and opened the door, closed it and then held the button down on the key for a few seconds while aiming it at the driver door. I then tried aiming the key at the rearview mirror while holding the button down, the green light blinked a few times and nothing. I then proceeded to do the whole thing over again by openning the door, etc...This time after holding the button down aimed at the driver door for a few seconds to lock the doors, I waited a second and then aimed the key at the driver door again, holding the button down to unlock. Bingo, the green light kept blinking and the windows started to come down. Once I let go of the button they stopped, I held it down once again and they rolled back up, again back down and so on and so forth. I tried the whole sequence several times but it didn't work everytime, just whenever it wanted to I guess but at least I got it to work!!!

I was doing this in the parking lot of my office and people were looking at me like I was crazy, rolling my windows up and down...too funny! :p
