when u press the button to close for the first time and you keep it pressed u should hear a faint whining sound from the electric windows motors trying to work. immediately after press the button again, dont wait. it works for me everytime!!! luckily enough i do this in a garage so that no one can look at me weirdlY!

Finally... Although a little disappointed I was unable to figure this out on my own, the above mentioned method works (at least 3 for 3 so far) .
To restate for everyone:
1. Unlock car with remote (seems to make the car "active")
2. Re-lock car with remote holding button down for a few seconds
3. Unlock car with remote holding button down while windows roll down
I can't believe it works. I must have occasionally hit this sequence while trying in the past but never was able to recognize it. Case solved. At least for 97 E420/320 (W210) with green and red indicators on the door.

This feature is also listed in the 2000+ model owners manual. It is called "Summer Opening" when you open all windows and it is called "Convenience Feature" when closing everything.
Aim transmitter eye of remote control at door receiver.
"Summer Opening"
*Car must be locked*
Continue to press Unlock transmit button even after unlocking the vehicle. The windows begin to move after 1 second.
"Convenience Feature"
*Car must be unlocked with windows down/roof popped*
Continue to press Lock transmit button even after locking the vehicle. The windows begin to move after 1 second.
To interrupt movement, stop pressing the transmit button.

Unfortunately it's not quiet that simple with the 97's, but close.
You can skip to #2 (my posting above) if the car is already unlocked and the windows still works.
