![Question](https://mbworld.org/forums/images/icons/icon5.gif)
I have a 2000 E320 and the glass is broken on the driver side rear view mirror. The mirror of course is self-dimming and heated. I only need to replace the glass. Does anyone know if this can be done and/or where I can obtain the glass only? I have found over-layer replacements that are not self-dimming and use the residual heat from the existing mirror. I am not intersted in doing this. Can the glass be replaced or does the entire unit need to be replaced? Thanks in advance for the responses.

Yes
heated self dimming glass can be replaced.
Look used, new will empty your wallet.

if you think you can forego the dimming feature, you can pick up aftermarket
mirror, flat or angled (kind of like curved), and heated for $30 from UK. few
other folks have purchased from them and reported on MB forums that they're ok.

Am I mistaken or isn't the heating element separate from the glass? If I purchase the self dimming glass does the heating element come with it or isn't that part of the mirror housing? I am getting conflicting versions and so far you guys have been right on the money with everything. The only glass I have been able to locate has been standard glass and if you want the heat to work you have to use overlayer glass (keeping the broken glass in place) and I don't want to do that. I'd like to have the dimming and the heating to work (but I don't want to pay the dealer price if I don't have to). Thanks guys...

If only the cover glass is broken, it can be removed along with the goo inside, leaving the actual mirror, which would still be heated. There is an electrical plug connected to the back of the mirror glass for the heating and dimming features. Both heating and dimming are built into the replaceable portion you would consider "the glass". Aftermarket is about half the dealer price in my area, still big money.

The heating element is embedded in the glass which is actually two layers of glass with a thin charged liquid film between them. The glass can be purchased from Autohuas for around $350.00US new. Dealer price could be double that. The one from Autohaus will be from the same maker but the MB logo will be scratched off. Mine has been replaced now for four years with no issues. The glass is easy to remove and replace with a couple of leads coming from the back.

Re: Thanks
So far Autohaus has been the best price that I have found on a OE type replacement. If memory serves me, they want right around $330 for the mirror.

there was a guy in seattle with an 00-02 mirror (complete assembly) selling for
$100 or so early this year. you may want to check out 210 and Classified
forums on Benzworld. i was going to buy it as a spare for family 210 but never
got around to it.
