Vacuum line in headlights

Vacuum line in headlights
Hello, I have an E420 and I am looking at replacing the headlights. I pulled one of the headlight housings out but there is some sort of vacuum line attached to it that leads to a round black thing inside the housing which is attached to nothing. Can someone please tell me what this is and what it does. Thanks

it's not a vacuum hose, as far as I know. it's part of the vertical adjustment
feature within the headlight. the black crowned knob outside the headlight
housing is connected to the 4" round thing via geared linkages. turn the crowned
knob and the whole reflector rotates up/down. the hose is connected to the
round thingy and terminates at the outside of the headlight housing as a simple
vented port. but what i don't know is exactly why the hose exists and placed
right there, at least without dismantling the headlight
feature within the headlight. the black crowned knob outside the headlight

I have Xenons on my car...and you are correct. Xenons (at least in Europe) have self leveling activated by sensors on the front and rear axles...they also must have washers fitted.

Hi Raymond, you had me doubting myself for a little while then. I have a Xenon equipped car so know that the lights are auto adjusted electrically.
I did have a car with halogens and these were internally adjustable via a wheel beside the light switch in the car. This system is indeed vacuum operated or electrically operated, everything is detailed here:

Look for your model, then look in section 80, sub section 015 for the vacuum system, or section 82 sub section 215 for the electric system

ahh, that is indeed a unique feature not generally found here with North Am cars. ![bow](https://mbworld.org/forums/images/smilies/bowdown.gif)

I wonder what part of the world the OP hails from, or the other poster...it does help if members fill in the user cp.

i was presuming north america for the OP. i've disassembled numerous 210
headlights so their description matched that of the ones I've handled. it is
not a vacuum hose/diaphram......and is different than that shown in the
diagram you referenced in post #8.
what I believe the OP was describing was this....the large white disk, with
hose terminating at the far left, just above the rectangular headlight harness
socket.
